If there's one thing that can be said about Cocteau Twins, it's that they are the exception to the music industry's first rule that to be successful, you have to be able to slide the music into a neat little category. And Cocteau Twins transcend that with an ability to get under your skin and stay there. Kicking off in 1982 with Garlands, the different vocal style of Elizabeth Fraser combined with the processed guitars of Robin Guthrie and Will Heggie on bass, they already found themselves in the midst of a media huddle. 1983's Head Over Heels wasn't quite so impressive, but they recovered for 84's Treasure. The media used words like "effervescent perfume" to describe the Cocteau's hazy world, with one famous critic claiming that he saw God during one of their concerts. With Treasure, Heggie was replaced by Simon Raymonde who remains with the band to this day. In 1985, the best-of compilation The Pink Opaque was released. During 1986, though, Raymonde concentrated on This Mortal Coil while the Fraser/Guthrie team put out Victorialand, a very short but very effective acoustic album. Success began in the U.S. with 1988's Blue Bell Knoll, which found the Cocteaus polishing their style a little more, and 1990's Heaven Or Las Vegas album pushed them farther into the stratosphere. Tensions with their label 4AD reached a head and they broke off with them to be signed to Fontana for the impressive Four-Calendar Cafe, which came about in 1993. They've also released numerous EP's which I won't get into other than 1984's "Pearly Dewdrops' Drops" (released in the U.S. as "The Spangle Maker". "Drops" was their first noticeable hit. Their new album, tentatively titled Milk And Kisses is slated for release in early 1996. [jason]
