Arcane Device is David Myers who uses a technique of sound manipulation through feedback processing. however, his recordings are not really harsh dense walls of noise. rather, they tend to be what is sometimes referred to "ambient noise" or soundscapes in the vein of Hafler Trio or John Duncan.

FETISH is a split CD release between PGR and Arcane Device on Silent Records released in 1990. it consists of four PGR tracks and one rather longish track by Arcane Device.

TROUT was also released on Silent, and since i don't own this i can't really comment on it. but i'm sure it's quite good.

and actually, there are at least two other Arcane Device CDs available:

ALSO SPRACH ZRATHUSTRA (Anckarstrom 2) this was released as part of the Anckarstrom series and then later re-issued by Staalplaat.

ENVOI IN CUMIN (PlayLoud) this is the most recent, and aparently his last release. this is one long 72 minute track that is very reminiscent of Nurse With Wound's SOLILOQUY FOR LILITH on a first listen, but it's structurally much different. Myers takes a more technical approach to creating the sounds of Arcane Device. for this release he utilizes a term he calls a "soft loop". the process involves a pattern to base the entire piece on except that it never literally repeats itself. "even the time period remains unfixed". i like this disc quite a bit and highly recommend it if you can find it.

For those who have not encountered either of these two albums: Also Sprach Zarathustra is extremely minimal and very darkly textured, all in a single track album. The music seems to hover at the interface between timbre and larger scale structure. Diabolis Ex Machina is at the opposite extreme... 19 short pieces, each highly rhythmic and violent. The textures are again highly complex, but here they are much more choppy, with distinguishable voices.

A.R. Kane

Releases

Call it "haze of sound", or "dream music" as this British group likes to describe their creations. Starting off with 4AD, they released the 12" single 'Lollita' and collaborated with sample whizzes Colourbox to produce 1987's biggest surprise hit 'Pump Up The Volume'. Moving on to the smaller One Little Indian label before finally finding a home with Rough Trade, they released 2 brilliant EP's (the drifting 'Lovesick' and the more danceable 'Up home!'). Possibly their best album came afterwards. 'Sixty-nine' featured endless guitar noodling and A.R.Kane-style stoned vocals, but what was largely ignored was the fact that it's the most beautiful guitar noodling committed to CD. Start here if you can find a used copy of it. With their subsequent double-album release "i", A.R.Kane harnessed that guitar energy into more accessible, pop-like tunes (except the 2-minute "Long Body" which proves that they could still make a single chord move). Rough Trade collapsed for a period and in an odd move, David Byrne's label Luaka Bop signed the band and released "Americana", a compilation of the best tracks from the Rough Trade catalogue. Their latest album "New Clear Child" continues in more of the "pop" category, but it still maintains the same notion that if you've ever had a strange dream, this would probably be the music you heard in the background.
