When Black Francis, leader of the seminal underground band Pixies, sent
a demo tape to 4AD, they liked it so much that they released the demo untouched
as Come On Pilgrim in 1987. Francis, who was known for his screaming vocals
and left-of-centre lyrics, got his ideas from screaming at a wall (so he
said in interviews at the time). With 1988's Surfer Rosa, Francis' time
in Puerto Rico showed up with his grunge sound tinged with Latin styles.
Doolittle is considered the quintessential album by the Pixies, paring
down the guitar work but still allowing Francis to bellow his words at
the top of his lungs. Bossanova in 1990 was almost a concept album, paring
down the grunge sound for a surfy sound and lyrics which centred around
the theme of outer space. Their swan song of 1991, Trompe Le Monde went
back to the wall of sound but trading the screaming for more singing.
Afterwards, differences between Deal and Francis caused the group to split
up; Deal followed her new band
The Breeders
to success while Black Francis became
Frank Black
and launched a solo career.
