Barre chords are older than rock and roll. The old blues guys used them, there would have been no Chuck Berry without them, where would the Beatles have been without Chuck... it goes on and on... I don't use them much myself, but they can be fun and useful and easy. If you really want to have some fun just tune your low E down to a D... you can play them with just one finger... instant grunge, Black Sabbath, whatever... There's a time and place for everything, even guitar in guitar playing.
John... Who is too lazy to learn other peoples songs... and probably too uncoordinated, and that's one of many reasons I probably never played in a band. ;^)
