I just thought you'd like to know that Kila, a group whose members include regular Dead Can Dance colloborators Ro/na/n O Sno/daigh and Lance Hogan, have released a new single ('O/n Taobh Tuathail Amach', ie, 'From the Inside Out'), and are just about to embark on an extensive tour of Ireland. More details on their Web page.
PS Where I have followed a name with a forward slash, this is to indicate that the preceding letter has a fada over it. A fada is a gaelic acute accent, which elongates the vowel.

Subject: Dead Can Dance and the song Bylar
For those of you interested, there's a compilation CD called The Echos Living Room Concerts Volume 2 featuring the song "Bylar" by Lisa Gerrard and Robert Perry (Brendan's Brother). This is the second song they sang on the tour and previously unreleased!!!
It's a great song starting off with dulcimer and then into mantra-like harmonizing. The song is 7:29 so it's full length.
Call 1-800-321-ECHO for this comp. The rest of the CD is pretty good too! It came out to a total of $18.98 incl. S/H so it's a little pricey, but worth it.
This may be old news, but I just found out about it so I thought I'd pass it along in case you didn't already know. The Echoes radio program recently released The Echoes Living Room Concerts Vol2, which contains the Lisa Gerrard/Robert Perry piece 'Bylar'. Apparently it was recorded live at her show at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia. Further information can be obtained at their website at: www.pri.org/echoes I personally had found this song to be one of the highlights of their tour this past summer and the rest of the cd is also good and well worth the $15.98 price plus shipping.
I'm the director of a french fanzine. You can visit our site at this adress : http://www.pratique.fr/~premo. Salut !
On the cover of the issue number 24 there was a picture of Lisa Gerrard. We did an interview with Brendan and her. You can see an extract (in french) of this interview on our site.
Have a look at the cover at http://www.pratique.fr/~premo/arch24.html (a stand alone page).
Note that the cover of our issue number 14 was Brenda Perry. If you want this picture too, I can send it to you (you can see it small in the section "autres Nos" in our site).
Thanks.

Subject: FSOL+DCD = WIERD
I was quite surprised when I saw this video yesterday on MTV (europe). it was about one minute long and the only title was: FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON AND DEAD CAN DANCE. no song or album title. but what I had gathered from the confused presenter was that the video was part of soundtrack that FSOL made for a short film (I forget what it's called). the video itself was just lots of mixed colours, keleidoscope style, and I hadn't noticed anything new from DCD, just a remix from The Serpent's Egg. that's all I know.
The song is actually entitled "Papua New Guinea", and is a Future Sound of
London recording; they only sampled "The Serpent's Egg".
Mike ([email protected])
Well i finally received the Moonchild video today. It is a real copy in a real box and all. Took a week to arrive all told. It is in Spanish with English subtitles. Lisa Gerrard appears second in the credits. Also appearing in the credits is David Navarro who was on the "Serpent and the Egg" cd, he plays Lisa's "husband". Lisa has the second biggest part in the film and is rather a good actress I think. Wide range of emotions. It is so odd to see her cast in such a different environment. Not at all the austere angel we are used to. She crawls on the floor, screams, rolls in the mud, climbs up chimneys, etc.
What i find of interest:
10 or so dcd songs, including 3 Lisa chant pieces. Some ambient noise in the background but the majority of the music is played without any dialogue over it. The songs sound very sonorous and ambient, coming closest to "the Protagonist" and the ambient bits from "the Carnival is Over". Definitely a soundtrack rather than an album per se, major themes and chords revisited several times. A few standout pieces though and oddly I detected only one partial section among what i have recorded. Otherwise all brand new never recorded music.
The film overall is good, not great but good. There are no gaping plot threads and the whole thing makes sense. It starts out a bit slow and never really gets to be some big racing across the world ala "Until the End of the World" kind of thing. Just a small quiet film about a boy and Lisa Gerrard as his mother.
Just thought I'd drop you a note, to add a few more official releases and/or promos that I have found with either DCD or Perry/Gerrard solo pieces. I don't have the discs in front of me, so pardon the ambiguities. Some of these are a little hard to find, but... Enjoy!

Subject: DCD's percussionist - Peter Ulrich
Going through my records the other day, I found a 12" of Peter Ulrich who played percussions on DCD's "within the realm..." This 12" is called "Taqaharu's Leaving", and was released on Corner Stone Records in 1990. It contains two tracks - the title track and another one called "Evocation". The music is very much alike DCD, and Ulrich thanks Brendan & Lisa for inspiration and help.
Does anyone have any idea if this 12" came to a full length album, and is it available these days?
the 12" "taqaharu" was advertised in brochure form on the seats of the 1990 concert tour. i do not believe there was ever intended to be an album, just the ep. i have never seen the 12" for sale. you are lucky to have it. i would love a copy. --todd sanders

The music is Heat and Lisa Gerrard actually has two songs on it.

well, we've done it again. Borders Books and Music is now running a promotion with Warner Bros. In our espresso bar we are promoting DCD by giving away posters and replacing our Borders' napkins with oh, so suave Dead Can Dance napkins... we've done this in the past with the tindersticks and innocence mission. it's kind of weird blowing your nose on one of your favorite artists. well, i know some of you completists would like to know. cheers...
"Moon Child" was released on video sometime in 1996. I just rented it at the video store. I have been trying to find it for years. The soundtrack is by DCD and one of the main actors is Lisa Gerrard. It was o.k. I didn't think it was all that great actually. Here is the address that was at the end of the film.

I havn't seen this on the list, but i'd guess there might be a few of you who would want to know about this. The (American) National Public Radio (NPR) show, "Hearts of Space" (HOS), will be featuring the music of Dead Can Dance. The show, titled "Spiritchaser" will be airing this week on those local public radio stations who carry this program, call yours for the time/date.

I also removed the "photos" section from the site. All images from this area are now sprinkled throughout the information section.
I wanted to let you know that a new screen saver from Chronicle New Media entitled Griffin & Sabine: An Extraordinary Screen Saver incorporstes the music of Dead Can Dance. Besides having clips play through certain modules, the tracks--Ariadne, Windfall, Yulunga, and Cantara--can be played in their entirety.
For more information call 800.722.6657 or email [email protected]. It retails for $29.95 and will be in stores soon, but people can reserve copies by calling the above number.
An official De Nova Da Capo Website is going up at webwrks.com/dndc. Lisa Gerrard contributed two original tracks to their compilation "These Wings Without Feathers", and Brendan has been heavily involved with Elijah's Mantle and provides percussion on CoEx's "Synaesthesia". The Elijah's Mantle album "Betrayals and Ecstasies" resulted from the poetry recital at Lisa's 1995 tour. Most DNDC albums are recorded at Quivvey Church.
Not much is up yet, but Mark Ellis is personally overseeing the project and is excited to get running, so it shouldn't be long.

For all of those in the Philadelphia area. WXPN will be having a FREE screening of Toward The Within at The International House 3701 Chestnut Street on Sunday July 7, 1996 at 3:00 PM.
The song Lament was only released on a 2 track French promo digipack called "Deux titres - Live" (1994). This song was recorded live at the Wilshire Abel, Los Angeles 4.10.94. [VISA 3558 - Diffusion Exclusive Virgin France S.A.]
There is a (short) Dead Can Dance interview that was recently posted that is worth a look if only for the artwork alone.
I'm trying to get Muchmusic (Canada's MTV, which is also available in the US on cable) to have a "Spotlight" (where they play 30 minutes of videos from a specific band) or at least a feature in their world music program (ClipTrip) on DCD. Friends of mine were successful in getting them to hold a Radiohead spotlight. And with the new album coming out, there's probably no better time to ask, esp. if a new video is released with the album.
SO... could you please ask the North Americans on your mailing list to send a similar request? It would help if several people from different regions sent one in. The addresses to send to are listed below:

Just received a promo of the new DCD album, "Spiritchaser", and thought I
would supplememnt the list with
the tour dates and some of the 4AD accompanying information.
Dead Can Dance are Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, supplemented on this tour
by a further 7 musicians, including John Bonner, Ronan O'Snodaigh, Lance
Hogan, Robert Perry and Pieter Bourke.
The band will play a two hour set of material taken from their new album,
"Spiritchaser" as well as music stretching back as far as the band's first
EP for 4Ad(1984's "Garden of Delights") through to new, as yet unrecorded songs.
Unduobtedly their finest release to date, "Spiritchaser" focuses on the more
percussive, tribal side of Dead Can Dance's music, together with the vocals
of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard. The album was recorded at Perry's Quivvy
Church studio in Co. Cavan in Ireland over the course of the last 12 months.
The World tour dates are as follows:

Lisa Gerrard stated the following about the new Dead Can Dance album when I spoke to her on Friday the 5th April.
Release dates: Europe, 3rd June; US 11th June.
The album contains a lot of mantra and mantric type sounds, that is to say, where chants are used as meanings in themselves. Brendan does a lot of the vocals in this style. DCD explored many different areas including South American rhythms and Haitian music. The album is very active and very positive in the way it celebrates spirituality. It is a collection of music with a big smile. DCD spent a lot of time working on the right titles for the tracks. Lisa sees the titles as being very important given that the spoken vocal content on the album is minimal. The titles say it all.

Lisa Gerrard Gives Exclusive Radio Concert on Echoes
On January 23, 1996 Echoes is proud to present Lisa Gerrard recorded live in concert.
Gerrard's performances have been described as "transcendent," "spiritual" and "entrancing." On Echoes, she brings a six piece ensemble of world percussion, exotic strings like the bouzouki and yang ch'in, keyboards and voice.
With this ensemble, she interweaves her voice, intoning ancient chants, mystic hieroglyphics and choral refrains. They recreate the haunting atmospheres of her solo debut, The Mirror Pool (recently featured in the Michael Mann film Heat) and perform several as yet un-recorded works.
Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance have emerged as one of the singular voices of the 1990s, weaving together their own synthesis of choral and vocal music, world music and contemporary atmospheres. You can hear it all on Lisa Gerrard's only radio performance from her 1995 North American tour. It's only on Echoes, on Public Radio International stations throughout the United States.
To find out where you can hear Echoes in your area, call your local public radio station or Echoes at 610.458.1110. Or visit our world-wide web site.
There is a French novel inspired by Dead Can Dance's music and some biographical elements. The novel is absolutely NOT a biography, it must be understood in this way. For those who read French (I don't know if this novel has been translated in English) the novel is:
