Hmmm. This is an interesting thread. I, on the other hand, very much enjoy
HNIA. Livonia, however, is my least favorite. Do those of you who dislike
HNIA feel the same way about _Home Is In Your Head_, which is by *far* my
favorite HNIA release? To me HNIYH is nothing short of brilliance.

It means it's a dumb and confusing way to describe someone (on a par with

under the impression that the Cocteaus were a new band. Perhaps it was a
completely different Liz Fraser who died. Perhaps this is a waste of time.

wondering), LG said the new album would be out in April. "Future Music"
is the name of the mag where the interview appeared, not the album. (Sigh
of relief. One can only wonder what a DCD album called Future Music would

it's amazing. some of g.c.'s best work. also it's way out of print and it's
worth something, but the music on it is spectacular. if you don't run back
tonight and go pick it up, it may be gone and once you hear the cd you'll

that double disc greatest hits is wonderful! there are really wonderful
things on that second disc with stuff re-done completely differently by
folks such as chemical bros, underworld, weatherall, etc etc... worth
haveing. and the versions of some of the asides are slightly different to

Well those songs you refer to liking (Morningrise, She Calls) I love as
well, but they are from about 6 or so years ago. Times change, and so do
people and their art. It's like expecting the Cocteaus to still be
sounding like they did on Treasure (which I am glad didn't happen, or else
we'd have never seen Love's Easy Tears or Victorialand). As for Slowdive,
I thought the old 'shoegazier' EP's were brilliant, Just For A day is
pretty good, Souvlaki is pure dead brilliant, 5EP is pure dead brilliant,
Pygmalion is pure dead brilliant, and Mojave is brilliant (which also shows
how strong their songs truly are without relying on heavy effects). The
point is that I never hold an artist to having one and only one sound that
they can't stray far from. Great music is great music, and if that entails
a *drastic* sound change from previous releases, I'm that much the happier
for their pointing my mind in a whole new direction!

i very much enjoy hiiyh, but i bought livonia when it came out.(i grew up
in livonia(superfun) and the tape store i went to get it at charged me
close to 20$!) i think that since hiiyh was not even an option at the
time and livonia was so different from everything i was being bombarded
with that it made quite an impression on me. maybe i am being too
nostalgic.
did anyone out there in the ones and zeros get livonia when it

A sad chapter in 4AD-L's history, indeed. Liz was accidentally shot by a
drunk hunter who had mistaken her for an Oomingmak shortly after the
Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas tour. Her death rather hindered the recording
process of their following release, Four-Calendar Cafe, which took quite
a while to be released. This is also why Milk & Kisses has been delayed
so much.

Sorry, the above is not 100% accurate. Although the Oomingmak incident
did occur, Liz was not killed, she merely went into a coma for three months.
The tragic part of the whole saga is her loss of vocal chords since the
accident. Fortunately Robin (with his knackers in a vice) has filled in nicely
on the recent Twinlights and Otherness EPs.

Livonia remains my favorite of HNIA's albums: it is their most
idiosyncratic and the still reminds me of long nights in dark rooms
waiting for tabs o' acid to clear out. Otherworldly chirps, tribal
candances, and guitar sheets loop in and out of arctic madrigal like
vocals. Pretentious, but in an original direction. It's the
hallucinogenic one.
Home is in Your Head captures the remorse and resentment (and the
self-loathing for feeling these) of a lost relationship, and lost time.
Slow, treated accoustics, and gaping empty spaces. It's the spooky one.
King of Sweet, largely remixes from the Home is in Your Head area, is a
mix of pistakes and reverbed out varients on HIIYH pieces. It's the
completest fetish disjointed one.
The Dirteaters EP is eponymous work of a conventional all-femme noise
band which resembles early HNIA in the lyrical content and sing songy
vocal rhythms. It came with the domestic HIIYH CD, but I rarely listen
to it. Earlier HNIA is inspired, this is pastiche with self-parodic
vocal overlays. It's the disappointing one.
Mouth by Mouth alternates atmospheric sound contructs as from their HIIYH
days with the noise pop of the Dirteaters. My feelings about it are
mixed in the same proportion. I'm bewildered why others consider it
their "best" work, or that the concessions to pop convention are
considered progress. Then again, there are those who think CT peaked
with Heaven or Las Vegas. There's no accounting for taste.

Not exactly, though many scientists (and particularly mathematicians) are
good musicians, and music theory is extremely mathematical. And
engineering advances like the pianoforte, amplification, tape recording,
overdubbing, effects boxes, the TB-303 synthesizer, etc. have all
inspired great music through a collaborative process with great musicians.

What I was objecting to was the assumption that scientific/ mathematical/
technical ideas were not worthy of inspiring good music, unlike squishier
ideas from the humanities -- e.g. that a band naming themselves after a
Wallace Stevens poem are cool, whereas one naming themselves after a
theorem from group theory aren't. An unfortunate prejudice that I think
is actually lessening with the growing hipness of the Net, fractals,
chaos, et cetera. Fractal geometry, at least as cool art, is certainly an
integral part of the rave & ambient scene. And historically, the old
scientist/nerd image was a great influence on Kraftwerk and Devo!
I have to admit that part of my outrage is because I've long had a dream
that if I ever started a band (ha!) I'd name it Venus By Radar, which was
the title of a planetary science symposium at Caltech back when I was an
undergrad.

I think this is a play on the album title - "Prazision" which may mean
precision as in the instrument shown on the cover. I think the
instrument measureing the bearing is some kind of vernier caliper.

In addition to Pentamerous Metamorphosis, I also own G.C.'s "76:14" and
Reload's "A Collection of Short Stories". 76:14 is very similar to Pent.
Met. -- although it does have a few slow places. If you like Pent. Met.,
you should definitely look in 76:14. Reload is a more dancy/techno side of
G.C. Short Stories is an excellent buy, although I believe that it's now
out of print and therefore difficult to buy. You really can't go wrong w/
either album.

nah, you can't get much more hallucinogenic, acid-wise, than track 5 on
hiiyh. i love that cd, but besides that track it is definitely NOT
recommended listening under the influence of 'the dreaded lysergic(sp?)'
unless you are a very stable and happy person. but even then you might
freak out anyway.

[Sorry for the cross-post, but this looks like one hell of a
show, bringing together different kinds of new musics in one night.]
Hey - check the Voice for a show called "Offbeat" next friday at
Westbeth Theater in NYC.
Looks like DJ Krush, DJ Spooky, Skylab will be preforming along
with Moby, David Byrne, Laika, Meat Beat Manifesto, Tortise, EBN,
MY BLOODY VALENTINE?????, etc etc! It's a long show - from 8:30pm -
Looks like tickets ($12) have to purchased at the Whitney Museum,
Mondo Kims, Other Music, Rebel Rebel or Vinyl Mania.
There's also an info-line, 631-1065. However, this is not much
info about which bands will be LIVE and which will be "virtual."
Anyone know anymore about this event?
It's sponsored by the Red Hot, which is putting an album out of
these people called Offbeat and its celebrating the Whitney
Museum's exhibit on beat-culture.

It depends on what you mean by science. Taken broadly, all artists
(except the purest punks) are scientists, since they make a rational
study of their instrument, composition, lyric writing etc. Of course,
intuition plays an even bigger role than intellect as there are no
art-making algorithms that can touch the ones we're born with, but the
intellectual side is still important: there's a strong artisan aspect
to good art.

I bought Livonia when it was first released, spite of the fact that it was
an import (here in the U.S. anyway) and I had never heard of the band,
for two reasons: a) it was on 4AD, and at the time (1990), I had rarely been
disappointed by the label; and b) the cover was really nice.
I thought it was (and still is) a very good album. I can see someone hearing
Livonia for the first time thinking it was just "noise", but upon repeated
listening, the melodies, repeated phrases (in the musical sense) and the
structure becomes clearer. Someone earlier mentioned that Livonia is an
album you *have* to listen carefully to in order to appreciate. I would
agree with that assessment. Warren's attention to details makes Livonia, in
a way, the antithesis of Eno's ambient music (Music for Airports, for example).
because it demands you focus on the music.
I would agree with the consensus, that HIIYH is HNIA's best work, but I think
I would place Livonia second (of the 4AD albums, I haven't heard KoS). Mouth
by Mouth is really good as well, but the more "rock" approach to some of the
songs does not make it as interesting (to me) as the earlier material.
While we're on the subject of Livonia, is the bonus track on the U.S. version
good enough to make it worth buying the whole album again?

Yesterday I saw 'The Doom Generation' at the big filmfestival over here. A=
bit strange but a lot of fun. In one scene some psychopath says to the=
girl, who he believes was his former girlfriend: "oh my pearly-dewdrops'=
drops" and then his arm is shot off... Sometime later the same girl is in a=
record store holding a copy of the 4 CD This Mortal Coil box, looking at=
the booklet and saying something like "I do miss my record collection" and=
in this record store they play an old song from Belly. At the end of the=
movie another nazi-psychopath is screaming "(...) this mortal coil (...)!"=
before he cuts off the penis from another guy (a lot of blood). So the=
director must like 4AD a lot. Is he on this list?
Didn't hear much of the soundtrack in the film, always at a very low volume=
in the background.
Another movie I saw: 'Leaving Las Vegas' (with Nicolas Cage and Eilsabeth=
Shue - she was in the audience) Go see it! It's great! You should also see:=
'Ulysses' Gaze (with Harvey Keitel), 'Kids' (by Larry Clark), 'Flirt' (by=
Hal Hartley), 'United Trash (tasteless), 'Blue In The Face' (by Wayne -=

First, a favor. Could someone please forward the 4AD daily digest for 21-22
January 1996? It was lost completely during downloading. Thanks.
Second, there was some discussion about different versions of the "Lilliput"
t-shirt. I have both, and the only difference I've noticed is that on the
mail order version, the 4AD logo is printed only once (in blue), whereas the
"Lilliput" version has it printed twice (in blue and in orange). Has anyone
out there noticed other differences?
Third, about the RHP rumors -- might I suggest we take anything we read here
with a grain of salt? I don't mean to disparage the veracity of the
original post (which may indeed be totally accurate). What I'm saying is
that the internet is an ever expanding source of information,
misinformation, _and_ disinformation. Moreover, it's becoming harder and
harder to tell which is which. The relatively unclear applicability of
libel and slander laws (at least in comparison with the established print
media) means that internet info should be read even more skeptically than,
say, the New York Times. Don't believe everything you read! That said,
please don't hesitate to forward any interesting rumors you hear!
Fourth, about the "decline" of 4AD and all the "shitty" bands it's been
signing lately...oh never mind! But I do want to say that _I_think_
(meaning that this is _my_opinion_) TARNATION is the best group 4AD has
signed since HIS NAME IS ALIVE. If you don't have a deep and abiding hatred
of everything that is country (i.e., you can dig Patsy Cline, Uncle Tupelo,
Gram Parsons, etc.) you might want to check them out.
Finally, an non-4AD question. I heard a rumor (on the radio) that THE BLUE
NILE will be releasing a new album soon. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm
this? See, rumor-mongering _and_ skepticism in action!

very different. Some of it is just indulgent studio fiddle faddle, but if

there is an inbetween space between the dionysian and the apollonian. It
is often interesting to indulge completely in either, however the mark of
true genius is to be able to walk that tight rope from which you can

my jury's still out on the new Lush singles. The A-side is fair so
far... clever little bits of pop-ism-sarcasm... and i like the lyrics...
though I'm not sure it really gells as a song tight enough. There are
some interesting b-sides...
I guess my disappointment so far is that I really liked the 'tight'
songwriting on 'split'... god that adjective seems so lame... I don't
know 'Split' was such a triumphant return for them from the mostly weak
'spooky'... so I'm still wondering where they think they're headed...
they're definately still going for more of a pop song than the
atmospheric bit...

well i sent email to my friend in paris and he mailed me a copy of "la mort
peut danseur" by jean-marc ligny, the book "based" on the music of dead can
dance
it seems to be a fantasy theme taking place in ireland in 1181 during the
norman invasion.. there are four parts to the book each named after one of
the first 4 dcd albums, and all the chapters are named after dcd songs. there
is a brief letter from mrs. lisa gerrard (tuschewski) in the front
"one of the most important compliments to a person and his work is to inspire
another man's work"
lots of quotes from dead can dance songs throughout.

esp dolphins/esp summer/esp continent. . .it's all the same. . .
they have a cassette only release on time stereo -- a tape only label run
out of the record collector record shop in livonia. a cd version of the
tape, esp continent, was recently released in france, and is reportedly
available for $20 (cash or money order). a 10" was released on farrago
records out of (austin?), texas. i'm sure you'll here from hk on that one.
a mono 7" was planned for release on perdition plastics, but that was
shelved. perdition is reportedly releasing a cd of the tape (don't know if
it'll be the same as the tape or w/ remixes) sometime in the future. i have
the tape and the 10" (will have the cd soon -- hopefully), and both are
excellent.
ian also appears on "cooper time," another time stereo release. some sort
of tribute to alice cooper (he's under the name "united friendly," and no, i
don't know what song he sings).
i don't have any ordering info with me, but if anyone wants more info,

Well, you could try with "Terra Regina". You can find nice sounds,
even if it's a little exagerated here and there. This group
falls into my category of "DCD wants to be", which is not a bad thing.
I put them along with the australians Eden or Ordo Equitum Solis. They
all sound well, but they lack the "naturallity" DCD has.
I mean, when I hear a song like Summoning of the muse, I never
feel like Lisa is doing a teathrical-medieval-gothic stuff. She just
sings in a so honest and pure way, you'd never say she's pretending.
On ther other side, if you read a Mephisto Walz lyric like

clients in around 45 or 46 countries now. Outside the USA there is a
charge for FPH (foreign postage and handling) (on both paid and freebie
subs) that varies from magazine to magazine. I have found their staff to
be very friendly and courteous. They even helped me with an address change
when I moved from one country to another.
The owner thinks of his service as a "club" and his clients as "members"
(even though there is no extra fee to become a member - your first purchase
automatically makes you a member) and he is real picky about who he accepts
as a new member. When he sets you up as a new member, he himself calls
you personally on the phone to explain how he works his deal, or sometimes
he has one of his assistants call. He is kind of quirky sometimes - he
insists on setting up new members by phone so he can say hi to everyone (I
sure wouldn't want to have his phone bills!), but you can place future
orders (after your first order) via E-mail.
He has some really friendly young ladies working for him, who seem to know
just as much as he does about this magazine stuff. If you live overseas,
he will even call you there, as long as you are interested, but I think he
still makes all his overseas calls on the weekends, I guess cause the long
distance rates are cheaper then.
He only likes to take new members from referrals from satisfied existing
members and he does virtually no advertising. When I got set-up, they had
a 2-3 week waiting list for new members to be called back so that they
could join up. (Once you are an existing member, they help you immediately
when you call. ) I think they are able to get back to prospective new
members the same day or within a few days now, as they have increased
their staff. I am not sure about this.........but if you email the above
form to them, that is the way to get started!
They will send you their DELUXE EMAIL CATALOGUE (around 525K-big and
juicey) !)...if you completely fill out the form above. It has lists of
all the freebies, lists of all the titles they sell, titles broken down by
categories and detailed descriptions on nearly 1,200 of the titles that
they sell.
They then send you email that outlines how his club works and the list of
free choices that you can choose from, as well as the entire list of what
he sells; and then they will give you a quick (3-5 minute) friendly,
no-pressure no-obligation call to explain everything to you personally and
answer all your questions.
Once you get in, you'll love them. I do.

While speaking to Davin today at Time Stereo, we got to talking about the
ESP-Beetles "ESP-Continent" release over in France. He said they at Time
Stereo (based at The Record Collector in Livonia) had requested a few from
Karina Square and have yet to receive them... all he had seen of them was a
fax of the cover which he said was quite different than what he had expected.
He then said that Warren was heading down to Chicago next weekend to speak
with the people at Perdition (re the domestic release) and to put on a
hisnameisalive show while there (since that is also where Karin is living).
Unfortunately, Davin could not remember the name of the place, only that it
is next weekend (late notice again!) at a coffeehouse that seats only about
50 people or so and that it was already sold out.... hmmm. Anyway, I'm sure
some of our Chicago-based listies could sneak in and confirm what I've been
telling them all along about the new stuff from Warren & co... simply
brilliant!!!

What's in a name etc. I take it no one here has actually _heard_ this
band(?); I'm intrigued (DCD reference) to find out more about them. Also,
I've never heard Red Shift, but I actually kind of like the idea of
referencing science in a band name. Now, Silverchair, _there's_ a shitty
band name!! (As are most band names here in Seattle...)

I absolutely love Otherness -- it's some of the greatest and most
interesting / innovative stuff I've heard in quite a while, and this coming
from one who has been disappointed by CT for the past few years. But then,
I'm a big Seefeel fan as well.
A while ago I heard something about a Seefeel remix of the entire _Treasure_
album (a fave of mine); I'm guessing that whatever root of truth was in that
rumor is realized in _Otherness_. Anyone know for sure?

No joke. Solid State has been gigging around the twin cities area
for a few months, and are a hit. I dont think they have any plans to rush
into a deal with a label, though. 4AD seems a likely possibility.

If you like Moon and the Melodies you'll enjoy Budd's "Lovely Thunder" album
which came out just after MatM. I also enjoy both his collaborations with
Budd's part) than LT, where Budd uses more synth, and the songs aren't as
piano-centered. Any of these albums is an excellent place to expand your
Harold Budd collection. Write me privately if you would like more details,
or would like to share your impressions of Glyph with me (which I have not
heard).

I would heartily recommend the two albums that Harold Budd recorded with
Brian Eno in the late 80's. One was "The Pearl" and I can't remember the
name of the other one, other than the fact that it has "Ambient 2:" in the
title.
The Pearl is a fave of mine.
If you want a CD that might remind you of music from the FIRST Star Trek TV
series, I would suggest Harold Budd - Pavillion of Dreams. It conjures up
images of big styrofoam rocks and Shatner being hypnotized by alien girls
with beehive hair-dos.

sometimes it takes something as wonderful as haroldbudd's music to break
my silence....
anyway, i believe everyone should buy as much harold budd as possible, but
if that is not possible: you MUST go pick up these two cds:
The Pearl (w/brian eno)
Lovely Thunder (includes a version of 'memory gongs' from TM&TM)
these albums will please anyone who enjoys budd's intrumental pieces on
TM&TM. 'The White Arcades' also nicely fits with these, but it has two
tracks on it that break my personal newage barrier (thus it is brilliant,
but slightly flawed to me).
other things of interest:
budd|garcia|lenzt-'Music for Three Pianos': all acoustic piano pieces.
beautiful, sparse, fabulous. usually sells for EP price too! highly
recommended.
budd w/zeitgeist-'She is a Phantom': ensemble pieces and poetry
readings. i actually really love this for what it is, but it's no 'Pearl'
'The Serpent (In Quicksilver)/Abandoned Cities': a combination of two of
budd's shorter works....if only it were longer.....
'The Pavillion of Dreams': this is early ensemble pieces. you have to be
a big budd fan for this....
there are a few other, but this gives you an idea of what's out there and
how fab it is....

We have some major Harold Budd fans here. Here are my two cents:
Generally agreed [I think] is that his Eno collaborations "The Plateaux
Of Mirror" and "The Pearl", as well as his solo "Lovely Thunder", are
beyond excellent. Definitive ambient music that is tranquil but not
treacly*. Listening to "The Pearl" at sunset in an empty house with the
warm red light fading from the room is about as transcendent and spooky
an experience as you can have without the use of chemicals or bothersome
religious disciplines.
The first two are almost all electric piano (but tastefully done) with
subtle Enossification treatments. "Lovely Thunder" has some of that but
also more synthy sounds. The track "Flowered Knife Shadows" on "Lovely
Thunder" is a slightly different mix of "Memory Gongs" from "The Moon and
the Melodies". That track on TM&TM is the most Budd-like of them all, so
if you like that one you will certainly enjoy "Lovely Thunder".
There is controversy over "The White Arcades", which came out a few years
after "Lovely Thunder". Some, like me, contend that it flops right over
into the treacle* well and oozes there like your typical newage product.
Others find it the equal of the aforementioned classics. My hint is that
if you're allergic to schmaltz, for safety's sake avoid it unless you can
manage to listen to it cheap or free.
The only other thing of his I have is "The Serpent in Quicksilver /
Abandoned Cities", a rerelease of two early albums. The first I'm not
much taken by, but "Abandoned Cities" and "Dark Star" are very nice
droney stuff with some ominous guitar fuzz.
* I'll nip another UK-vocabulary Q&A in the bud by revealing that
"treacle" is what the Brits call molasses. Only it might be a bit
different than our USofA molasses.

Being another avid Harold Budd fan, I'd suggest you to get hold of already
mentioned albums: Eno & Budd's "Plateaux of Mirror" and "The Pearl".
Also, rarely mentioned "Pavillion of Dreams" is also very good for newcomers
methinks; and dare I say that even "By the dawn early lights" would fit
in there, too - I still think that Budd's poems are nicely written and he's
got just a fine voice; assuming you liked "Glyph" you'd rather love
"BtDEL", as well as "She's a phantom".
"Lovely Thunder" and "White Arcades" are more synths oriented (I agree
that WA sometimes sounds a bit too newagey...altough I still like it
enough to listen to occasionally).
Hell, I can see I placed here almost entire catalog...let's wait for e's
comments :)

Yeah, but not as often as I find myself writing James Joyce-type prose in my
sleep, which I am unable to duplicate on awaking. The forgetting-great-songs
thing happens more when I am awake and far away from any instrument.

web sites for Details magazine and I thought I would query you all for
places of interest....being a music fan I've done
a lot of my own research, but wanted to make
sure I am not leaving anything out.

Dave is an extremely straight, very reliable guy. I have been ordering
from him since he set up shop (was it 2, 3 years ago, I can't remember) and
I have never had any sort of problem with him. He's always straightforward
with his customers, can get lots of cool stuff, and delivers as promised,
or, if he can't, tells you why.
Go buy stuff from him *now*!

Any Ed Cooper fans out there? I would love to find a discography of his
stuff. Had a chance to hear him on one of the local college radios...really
curesque voice. Love his stuff...thus far. I hear he was in a band in the
80's called the Aints.

When I sent out my "For Sale" list the other day (see
forgot to mention that I also have two copies of the Lush _for love_ CD-single
for sale. (I picked them up on my last trip to the UK.) Twenty bucks,
post-paid seems to be the market value of these things.
BTW, I was really surprised that nobody was interested in the Breeders/UVS
flexi. It took me over three years to track one of these buggers down (at a
reasonable price, Music & Tape Exchange in London wanted 20 pounds for the
bloody thing!)

One of the worst nightmares I've ever had was a concert : "Joan Baez and Johnny
Rivers Live in India." Johnny Rivers had a Neru jacket on and both of them
sang their greatest hits and duets. I woke up sweating. The concert went on
all night long. Very scary.

I received the E.S.P. "Continent" CD from Karina Square in the mail last week.
The CD is great! There are a few tracks that sound like HNIA songs with Ian
singing (instead of Karin) ... especially "Golden Heart of the Year". The
price is $20 (US) which includes postage (I just sent them a $20 bill ... not
the safest form of international payment, but it worked).

thinking about buying one, do it now. (It took alomost a month to receive the
CD from the time I mailed the order).

including addresses to order the tapes/CDs from.
I also added more info to the "Help! I can't unsubscribe!" section,
describing how to forge your old e-mail address. This should help some
people, I hope...
