Amazing.

Not much more to say, really. Lisa was angelic...white dress, lovely lighting,
*incredible* voice.

I met her father before the concert...he was selling posters &
programs (good price: $10 = 2 posters + a program). He told me to stick
around after the show...I did. They ended up leaving in a taxi...as they
passed, I waved the flower I had brought for her...she stopped the taxi...she
signed everything and told me that she had met me before...she recognized me,
somehow. I had to tell her that it must have been someone else. More fans
approached, she said goodnight, and the taxi pulled away. A brief encounter,
but I'm still flying...

The concert was a good mix of old material, _Mirror Pool_ tracks, and new
compositions. Most of the songs were quite different from their album
counterparts...the musicians really seemed to be enjoying their performance.
The poetry recital by Mark Ellis was stunning...does anyone have any more
information about his work? I've heard mixed reviews of the Elijah's Mantle
works. The drum (bodrean, right?) solo by Ronan O Snodaigh amazed the audience
as well. So much sound from an inanimate object...dcd.

i better go to bed and let the euphroria wear off...has anyone compiled
a set list for her shows? I was paralyzed for most of the show. There are
still 5 shows left on the tour...see one if you can.

                                        Aaron

Subject: rare 4ad stuff for sale

While I was at the Pop Festival in Arizona this weekend,
Stinkweeds bought someone's entire 4AD collection. While it
was by no means complete, there is a lot of old vinyl:

All the Birthday Party albums and probably all the singles,
the "Dark Entries" single (Beggar's Banquet label),
Cocteau singles,
the Happy Family album,
an In Camera release,
TWP's Sweatbox EP (I bought the other two)
and so on. I don't remember most of it.

The real prize, however, is a copy of Nature Mortes/Still Lives,
the Japanese release with the banner-wrap thing and lyric sheet.
Kimber either bought it for $100 or is offering it for $100, if it's
still even there. I was seriously tempted, but left it for a real
collector to have.

I can't guarantee that ANY of this is still left at the store,
but it's worth a call. Ask for Kimber at 602-897-7109. She's supposedly
now online, but I don't have her address yet.

Miki uses BOSS pedals on a BOSS power supply board. I could not for the
life of me tell what Emma was using. It seemed Miki had the standard
battery of BOSS pedals. Stereo Chorus, somoe kind of Distortion pedal,
more than one Delay pedal, a flanger, etc....

know if they will do mail order, but it is at least worth a try don't you
think (and better than $25).

Bob Stanley used to have an amazing record label of his own called
"Icerink," with loads of groovy St.Etienne-ish dancepop bands. Shampoo
was also on that label...but that label is no more. Now Bob has started
a new label called "Royal Mint" and i don't think any of the Icerink
bands are on it. I'm not too sure though. Most of the Icerink bands
broke up.

St.Etienne is an awesome band- they put on such a beautiful show and are
wonderful people. you must must must look into them. they've newly
recorded a cover of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" and they've turned
it into a melancholy dancepop song...so beautiful...

This is a couple of years old, at least - three Heavenly bands did an EP
of RSF covers, I think the Rockingbirds were one of the others.
Fundraising for AIDS, I seem to remember.

4AD binge this lunchtime - bought the Tarnation and Mojave 3 albums (the
latter has one of the prettiest covers I have seen for ages), and the
Air Miami EP.

over the weekend i got the amps' new single, "tipp city,"
and i really like it quite a lot. i realize this is a
minority opinion on the list. i'd heard and liked "empty
glasses" on ftww, and enjoyed the two new songs, as well.

i admit that at less than 6 minutes it's kind of a ripoff,
but hey...

yesterday i got the new i.c.e. newsletter and noticed, with
pleasant surprise that kristin hersh is scheduled to
release an e.p. on rykodisc on october 31st. it's called
"the holy single", and i guess it's a christmas theme. i
heard her say a while back that she'd be doing a christmas
release, and i guess this is it.

Subject: 4ad-Influenced musicians

Greetings all. I'm rather new to this list so I'm not sure if this has been
discussed yet. But here goes: Is there anyone here who actually plays
music or is in a band? I've been in several bands in the past few years
but, owning to living (temporarily!) in a musically uncool town, have
nothing going on right now. A bit of input from other 4ad-inspired
musicians would be great (private email would be fine if this is not
list-appropriate).

Oh, yeah, I play bass (mostly) and keyboards, will be moving to the San
Francisco area next year and am currently pondering starting a small label.

Pardon the use of bandwidth for this and thanks.

You're darn staright it didn't sit well! That kinda bugs me because I
didn't really see the big deal with it all. Most of their songs are pretty
long anyway.I think they (4AD) should have let them do what they had to do.
What's more disturbing is the fact that at Mark's solo show in june/July
(can't remember) in San Francisco, he was quite happy because he mentioned
that 4AD had agreed to pay for the additional record production time (which
he seemed to imply was a concern of the bands). But now, no new album! And,
in regards to Ivo, yeah, he doesn't seem to have anything good to say about
the guy or his "crew".

One song stood out as being real good. The title had
>somthing to do with paper.

I think it's "Make like Paper". I also like it myself. Again, thanks for
the info Brett!

It is on The Fred Ep. A single of Right Said Fred covers with
St. Etienne, The Rockingbirds, and Flowered Up, all artists on Heavenly
records.
St. Etienne does the best job with "I'm Too Sexy". They sample
The Smiths and add their own goofy lyrics about trousers or something, with
Bob or Pete doing the spoken word bits (not sounding quite so much like
Elmer Fudd as RSF) and Sarah doing the chorus.
It is quite humorous. I wouldn't really call it melancholy, though
Sarah's vocals certainly aren't quite as peppy as RSF. I believe it is
HVNCD19 or 29.
Oh, and proceeds from sale of the single went to the Terence
Higgins Trust, an AIDS prevention/research organization, because some
members of Right Said Fred are out as gay/bisexual.

Absolutely. This is the most accurate encapsulation of why I loathe them.
Asking, "Does irony carry across e-mail?" is like supposing that no book
could possibly be funny, because you can't see the author smile or hear a
laugh-track ... Only when there is the real possibility of someone taking
offense at something if it *wasn't* a joke, should colons and brackets be
used for anything other than punctuation.

Hi! I've been a really big fan of Belly ever since last year when I bought
King. I would really appreciate being on your mailing list since I don't
get any information on them around here. Thanks.

heard her say a while back that she'd be doing a christmas

So the rumor I heard is true...Kristen is finally leaving major-label Sire
here in the states for cool indie label Ryko? Sounded like a good move, it
certainly did wonders for Bob Mould's career...
