I've been watching exchanges between Uk / Usa list member debating free promos a
d samplers being available in Uk only. Think yourselves lucky you have the chanc
of even importing one of these rarities. South Africa (or should I say the maj
rity of consumers and record companies(being somewhat stuck between 1st and 3rd
orld)), has until 1993 never contemplated producing "alternative" record labels
ocally.

If our music tastes don't fall into the Top 40, we have to import them. And that
means almost everything - 4AD, Factory,Cleopatra, Roadrunner, WaxTrax, Projekt,
tc etc. Prices of imported CD's? South African Rands: R90-100. Equates to: $=27
s / promos. About two years ago Beggars Banquet agreed to distribution with an S
major so know we can get Love & Rockets, Bauhaus etc. And Cocteaus (because the
are on a major Label). Most of the bands on the list (Mojave, Scheer, Stereolab
etc) are unknown to us. But perhaps it is improving - Funky Little Demons was pr
duced locally.

Radio stations? We have one radio station (similar to Radio 1 in UK) that plays
ommercial shite, but has "alternative slots". So if your'e lucky you may here a
few newish releases. But, the list has to do for now, as even the NME or MM are
weeks behind. (and at a real bargain at triple the cover price).

But enough bitching. We make do. But sure would like a chance to get a few sampl
rs released here.

This brit thing reminds me. The new ap has the upcoming Mojave album as
coming out on the label 4AD U.K. The other recent releases, like "The
Mirror Pool" were just listed as 4AD. Does that mean I'm going to have to
buy an import? Just wondering.

bye,

eric

For her to come close to opera singers she'd first have to get a big bad
attitude. Seriously, she'd need some (more) training: her singing is
lacking in physical power, though she could fix that with a year or so
of training. Brendan Perry, on the other hand, has a decent natural
voice but would have to work a long long time to get anything resembling
power or depth in his voice. Lisa does have a lot of versatility, which
is missing and not really required of many opera singers. One thing i
find is that i like her singing on some older (pre-aion) albums . . .
in listening to the mirror pool, i get the feeling that she's been
singing high too much, and her lower voice has really suffered.
But i'd rather not compare lisa to opera singers. She'd be better off
singing in catholic masses rather than performing in some supposedly
outrageous part to a crowd of rich people with "taste". Maybe we
could compare lisa gerrard with diamanda galas, then compare galas to
 kathleen battle . . .

I got the tarnation album the same time i got the mirror pool, and while
the voice of the singer in tarnation isn't nearly as good as lisa gerrard's,
she uses it to much better effect in my opinion. I'm gonna have to go
get s'more country records. The mirror pool is nice, but it's kinda blah
to me. One song is relatively challenging, and the handel piece disgusts
me. She'd be better off doing varese or webern.

How does one put a ".sig" on the end of all one's outgoing
messages? I tried creating a file by that name and then sending myself
mail to test if it worked, but it didn't.

Oh sure. I feel pathetic at times for being as into 4AD as I am. And although
I may not be into collecting Ivo's "toe jam", I do at least try and obtain
each of this label's releases. To some this may be a pathetic existence. But
how pathetic would my life really be if I spent it as [email protected]
does. By trolling around newsgroups and leaving stupid, infantile remarks.
Ahhh. Now there's an outlet from the stresses of life.

TIGTHOI and FTWW are so utterly impossible for me to get a hold of. If any
body has any info at all on these, it would be appreciated. Also, to anyone
living in London, could I be e-mailed the tele for the Virgin Megastore?

Also does anyone remember SNUB. Is it stil around. Can you get episodes on
video. I have a crappy copy that I taped many years ago that profiled
FACTORY. I also know that v23 redid the titles a few years ago and that there
was either a profile on 4AD or v23 or both. Anybody? Gracias.

I know I'm not supposed to post things like this to the list, but the only
address I have for Jim J. is the old "jhuvm" one, and I assume that is no
longer valid since the move.

I haven't gotten any daily digests since 3-4 September 1995. Are other
digesters getting their mail? Is this a repeat of the problems of a few
weeks ago? Regardless of your answer, could someone please send me Jim's
new address? Thanks!
