Subject: Re: Critically Critical Critics

Why is everyone being so critical on this list.
Auctions, junk mail, ""4ad isn't what it used to be"" etc.
It seems that people are more interested in slagging people off than
talking about the music.

For instance, the new FREE CD "Facing the wrong way". Or whatever its called.
Why is everyone whingeing about what's on it.
This compilation hasn't been made for 4ad completists. Ivo didn't sit
down and think "What shall I put on this CD for my friends on 4AD-L".
I think the purpose of this is to attract people to the new and recent
releases coming out of 4ad. ie ordinary Joe Public goes into his local
Virgin sees he can get a Pixies CD cheaper than normal and with it he gets a
free CD of stuff he's never heard of by 4AD. He then goes home listens to
the new free CD and decides that he likes the Red House Painters track.
He then goes out the following week and gets Ocean Beach. Also, in the
back of his mind is that Scheer track so he places an order. This is therefore
a bit of a marketing ploy by 4ad.

I mean the CDs free for f's sake. Its not an attempt to be another Lonely
is an Eyesore.

People are also complaining that they don't like the new stuff 4ad are
releasing. Hey, they're not forcing you to buy it. There's no rule saying
'Thou dost like music by 4ad so thou must buy everything they release'.
I got both the Liquorice and Kendra Smith CDs and on first impressions
wasn't too impressed. Since I decided to give them another go and I'm
just beginning to warm to them. Maybe some people on this list should do
the same.

Enough said,

It's not so simple, is it. I certainly sympathise with the point you're
trying to get across, Jens, but I didn't want your email that contained
this line. Nor do I want the majority of email on the 4AD list (even the
on-topic stuff). Apologies if I'm labouring the point.

Like many arguments, this one has got out of hand because of people
taking extreme positions. There don't seem to be many dissenters to the
following (do there?):

1. Initial announcements of sales on the list are ok.

2. Bids or expressions of interest in individual items are not ok on the
    list.

There *does* seem to be an amount of disagreement over whether updates on
the progress of sales and auctions are ok on the list (I say yes, but what
do I know).

ainaxila wrote:

"Protest" at what exactly? Auction announcements, auction updates,
individual bids or something else entirely? This is kind of the point I
was alluding to above. The issue is getting lost in ill considered words.

Incidentally, I haven't protested and neither, it would seem, have hundreds
of other list members! What's more, a number of list members have argued
in favour of auction posts, including updates (do *you*, einexile, "even
read this mailing list"). You wouldn't be confusing your opinion with
the opinions of the rest of this list, would you?

einexile, I remember several months ago when you and I had a private email
conversation about what was and wasn't appropriate to post to this mailing
list. As I vaguely recall, there aren't any firm rules (big surprise!) but
you did at least persuade me that it's ok to post off-topic and that as
long as you think there'll be some sort of interested audience, it's ok. I
maintain that there is an interested audience for auction posts and
updates.

carolyn's fingers / bluebeard / summerhead / iceblink luck /
blue bell knoll / cico buff / a kissed out red floatboat /
ella megalast burls forever / pink orange red<<<

This track listing isn't accurate. I have this show on VIDEO tape. They
failed to include "Aikea-Guinea" -- unless that's what they thought was
"A Kissed Out Red Floatboat" (a song that wasn't even on the set lists
for the '94 tour). The rest of it seems right, however.

For those of you not too familiar with the shows from that tour (i.e. if
you didn't make it to one of them), don't be too shocked by the fact that
Liz barely sings any of the songs the way they were originally sung, except
for a handful, if that -- and then only barely. I think "Pitch the Baby"
is almost exactly the way it would normally be sung...as well as stuff
from Four-Calendar Cafe. She had consciously decided that she was going
to change her voice in the middle of the tour, so lots of vocal improvi-
sations are going on, some not-so-great sounding. Brant (of Dewdrops)
can confirm that Robin and the rest of the band weren't all too thrilled
about it, but oh well. Liz will be Liz. Some of the improvs come off
rather strikingly, like "Aikea-Guinea" and "Pink Orange Red"...then
you've got something like "Carolyn's Fingers", where she sort of loses
it live. Again, this only happened on the latter half of the tour. I
have a tape of their Paris show, and it rocked. *WAY* better than any
of the shows I saw or heard in the U.S. -- and the BEST live version
of "Carolyn's Fingers" I've ever heard, as well.

yes, i forgot to mention this.....'A Prison In The Desert' is from the film

alright, forget almost everything i said about this record yesterday.

intimate, scary, tragic, sexual.....you'll want to cry or hide in the
corner and fend off the monsters from under the bed (or both at the same
time). 'Picture of Mary' will crush you if you have any emotion in you
at all, not because of the 'story' it tells but just the overall
effect. the stuff from 'Dirty Sings' is not bad at all (like i said
yesterday), but intense, wonderful stuff. fans of the whole
cave/c&cs/neubauten/b.party thing will revel in this.....i wish you all
luck in tracking down a copy.

and e., thanks for reminding me of this. i'd gladly take a c&cs dub as i
only know them from soundtracks and a few songs on mix tapes.....write me
and let me know if you really want to do it.....

I didn't buy the cd... I bought Lisa Gerrard's Mirror Pool cd, and the FTWW
cd came together with that one.
A nice bonus! It's the same one as mentioned in the VOX-add. It's FREE.

Just kidding! This is actually a long overdue review...

Autechre - Garbage
------------------
These guys never fail to shock, but this never ruins anything. Garbage is
another very strange Booth/Brown record that nevertheless works
perfectly. This is not any kind of self-indulgent weirdness but true
inspiration. Nonsense congeals and becomes funky. A mess of filtery
matter forms a flock of chords, rhythmic and sweeping you away. The beats
scatter all around and are wild. Sometimes one wonders just what the hell
is going on. Still, this is music you can relax to, fall asleep curled up
inside. Garbagemx36 does all this and then drops in melodies and
decorations, floods the scene with lush chords like you hear on Bike or
444, and we end with a classic Ae-bleak moment, perfect for the world's
demise or a dawn spent alone. It is very moving. PIOBmx19 begins with a
very hip assault and adds in ambience which again comes together, like
glass shattering in reverse, into a killer dance multipattern. Super
cool. It builds to a plateau and then rides a smooth trance to near the
end of the track, where it starts an echoing breakdown much like the
ultrabrilliant Yulquen off the Amber album. Bronchusevenmx24 stands the
skeleton of its predecessor up and walks it around like a toy, the
remnants of its spirit swimming dreamily about it. The result, though
quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, is menacing. Wispy beats form at the
gates and take over, dancing with noise and yummy autechreclicks as they
join in and fill the song. And another classic Autechre ending as we draw
in on elements we didn't realize were there and are left with only their
afterimages. Is that a real clarinet? The artwork on this cd is a blurred
and mutilated version of the photograph featured on Amber, which causes
me to wonder if this whole disc is somehow derived from that album, but
hell if I can place the connection, or for that matter even the
connection between any but the second and third song on this ep. Track
four, VLetrmx21, is a beatless pure treasure, a sacred snowfall. As it
intensifies, the vibrations form their own song and lost melodies sneak
through barely noticed through the gaps. The song and album fall off
slowly together, dwindling away. This is a brilliant ep, as atmospheric
and exquisite as perhaps all of Amber, and it is *long* at 40 minutes,
the first track, 15 minutes long, flies past without you realizing. It
took me forever to get hold of this but it was certainly worth the wait.
Highly recommended to anyone who liked any of their previous material. It
is Autechre at their finest.

Sorry if you don't like Autechre, marv ;)

Duh. Sorry. :( Anyway I actually made the effort to get up and put the
song on and answered my own question. Here is my take on the lyrics for
anyone interested. I'm not entirely comfortable with it but it's as
clear as I can make out...

And...

In my learning-process of understanding HTML-language for designing en
creating WWW.pages (for myself and others), I've made this little 4AD-site
containing information from my own database. It's still under construction
and incomplete.

There's no NEW information on this page, just a catalogue, a list of
forthcoming releases
and a couple of 4AD-links.

I'm not sure yet if this page has a long life...

Anyway, for as long as it's out there, the URL for this page is:

Use Netscape for surfing.

Subject: Stereolab + Luna = Freakin' and Peakin'!

Sorry if it's already been mentioned...fell behind on mail, and none
of the subjects seemed to mention this, so I may actually be bringing
Stereolab news before anyone else...

Laetitia is on the new Luna record!!! The final track, a duet of sorts
with the Luna boy. All in french. Seem to be all about Bonnie and Clyde.

I've never been a big Luna fan, but I think I'm going to become one. While
this track is definately the best on the record, everything before it was
actually pretty good. Definately caught my ear more than the previous Luna reco
d.
This track alone makes up for the mess that MAQ was. Actually makes me
excited instead of worried for new Stereolab stuff.

A note to sadcore fans... The drummer from Codeine is playing with a new
outfit called Rex. Guitar, bass, drums, and cello. A little softer than
Codeine, but that's certainly not a bad thing. On Southern Records. Go
bother you're nearest retail employee for it now.
