The e.p. is Chains Unchanged and, yes, it is available on CD: the
Japanese-release "12 Inch 87 Anthology" (CY 4415). I've seen this CD
floating about in several stores still. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Splitting hairs, but it's _Chains_Changed_.

I found the disc rather difficult to locate, but it *is* still
in print from the Nipponese perspective, so any store that sells
Japanese imports should be able to deal with it.

The obligatory Tanya Track(tm :-), "Reel", is perhaps her best.
the other track ("Snailhead") was rerecorded sans-Tanya for a
"Firepile" EP b-side.

Anyone who is undecided about Throwing Muses should listen to this
EP. It's up there with the debut and _House_Tornado_, but for very
different reasons. (and _The_Fat_Skier_, too... :-)

BTW- No, "Cry Baby Cry" isn't a Beatles cover, although they do
cover that one on the "Not Too Soon" single.

He killed himself when Jeff was quite young (8?) - the reason they never
got to know one another is that he split from Jeff's mother before the
birth - JB has talked in interviews about meeting his father just before
he killed himself and not really making any emotional connection.

I don't know about the new AA album - it was advertised on the inside of
"Lifeforms", but I haven't heard anything about it since so I suspect it
is not going to appear any time soon. The story behind the "new" EP is
that it was released as a white label by "Smokin' Japanese Babe" several
months ago, and although there was speculation about it being FSOL
(despite its dissimilarity with their usual stuff), it was only
confirmed when the track listing for ISDN was announced and two of the
tracks were on that album. The non-ISDN tracks are very similar to the
two on the album, one is about eight and a half minutes long, one five
minutes, so this isn't really an essential FSOL EP, especially if you
don't like ISDN. I like it, and I'm going through a "Lifeforms is quite
a good album" phase, too - like my attitude to Red House Painters, my
estimation of FSOL's worth goes up and down like a rollercoaster.

> Any idea when the new Richard Kirk album is supposed to be released?

No, but it's some time fairly soon, I think - it was mentioned as one of
three or four upcoming Warp releases in the NME recently.

I can't find a mailing list for the Etienne in the canonical list of such
things. (Do they have enough fans?) As far as web pages go, the only thing
I am aware of is their stuff within Sony's pages (the Heavenly label is
apparently a Sony concern). The URL is "http://www.sony.com/
Music/ArtistInfo/SaintEtienne_TigerBay.html", and gives a brief biography
of the band.

Well, we all know that *pop-fans* run the best pages because they *care*.
So unless anybody knows of any hard-to-find pages that offer such a
service already, I'll use some of my Web quota and do-what-has-to-be-done.

Below is a rather incomplete discography. Anybody who wants to provide me
with the missing information and other items of interest which would
sit prettily on an Etienne Web page, please do e-mail me. (Not 4ad-l,
unless you feel that everyone needs to know!)

Subject: dcd song to the sibyl catalan

hello i am back again, your faithful dcd scribe. today i offer the long
promised original catalan version of song to the sibyl in the original
catalan language.

as i wrote last time:

this week's selection comes from the french import cd - cant de la sibil.la
by montserrat/capella/reial/jordi savall. on astree records E8705 from 1988.
this cd features three original versions of the song to the sibyll. included
on the cd are the latin, the provencale, and the catalan versions (of which
we will concern ourselves with the last one). the dcd version is about 10% of
the original 22m53s version. in the notes to the cd it reads that the catalan
version is the one which has lingered through time despite a ban imposed upon
it in the 16th century. it is one of the most ancient songs in the catalan
region, dating from the 10th century. in the 13thC the refrains of the sibyl
were began to to be sung in polyphony. The chant was performed mainly during
the feasts of christmas, but was also in some places, also performed during
holy week and particularly on good friday.

Listening again to this 20+minute version, it is very clear where the part
dcd sings comes in. i am providing the complete text to the chant in english,
rather than in latin, unlike i have done with original versions previously,
for i doubt few of you can read it. The chant is repeated a few times in the
20+min. version, however dcd does sing it all.

BTW dcd are extremely faithful to how this piece is supposed to be performed,
if this original cd is any indication.

so without further ado here we go.

This is a quick note with reference to the question on whether THE Verve
would have to change the name on their older releases or not. Well
someone mentioned that they were having a hard time finding the older
releases and asked if this was the reason. No I'm sorry to tell you that
it is not the reason, the reason you can't find any of the band's older
material is that all of the singles have been deleted. Currently there
are only three or four Verve (whoops, The Verve) cd's available: A
Storm In Heaven, No Come Down, This is Music (single), and possible the
Verve E.P.. It is only a word.

                                Cheers,

While it is true that Jeff Buckley never go to
know his father, it's not true that his father
died before Jeff was born. Tim Buckley was
simple estranged from his (ex-?)wife and young
son; Jeff only saw him a few times. I think Jeff
was 10 or so when Tim died.

erg....

well, um.... the new Kendra Smith album is out...the cover is real
neat...it's got that organ that she plays all the time. I haven't heard
it, tho. I think the catalog number is CAD 5006? *shrug*

oh! also... speaking of mistakes...this is really insignificant, but ...
I have Gilbert/Lewis' album 8 Time (?) CAD 16 CD and the back of the case
lists 7 tracks while the cd actually has 8 tracks listed on it and plays
8 tracks.

ok, the end.

The only other Insides release that is 4AD related that I know of is the

release on Guernica. It's one track, 40 minutes long, and it's real
pretty. Lotsa nice Xylophone and stuff. :)

On the back of the case the second version of 'Barge Calm' (the 1st track on
the B-side of the '3R4' LP (CAD 16) and track 5 on the CD) has been omitted.
That's all.

The end?

If we're listing mistakes, don't forget the ones
on the first Clan Of Xymox album and the Cocteau's
Garlands (UK only). In each case, two song titles were switched.

This Is Musc...is this the new single or what? I've not heard of it
except that I don't remember the names of the new singles. By "The Verve
EP" you mean the domestic release that was kind of a cross between
Gravity Grave and She's a Superstar, yes? YARD CD1 as it were.

It's really as shame. Those singles are masterpieces and a lot of space
was wasted on No Come Down. By my count this leaves six songs
unavailable. Very nice artwork, too. I hope there isn't a connection to
the lawsuit. I remember having a hell of a time finding Gravity Grave and
She's a Superstar when I finally did get enough into the band to want
these.

"All in the Mind" is a tremendous song. Damned shame...

verve is awesome. that is my contribution to that thread. i sincerely hope
they are not going the oasis/stone posers stones-rip-off route like their
english compatriates are. they have turned their initial pink floyd rip-off
into something original and pretty fucking great to boot, and id hate to
lose my favorite band in the whole wide world.

okay, enough of sounding like einexile, i have a question:
i have an insides promo 12" GUP4 with a:skinned clean and b:further
distractions. ive never heard it mentioned here in all the insides talk. is
this like some rare slab of vinyl or something? picked mine up for $3.99
used; its even got bpms on it! (112 and 116, respectively. :)
-joanna-
late for work cuz she wrote this post
oh, and also, im considering starting a verve list. any interest? mail me
privately with suggestions, flames, ideas, delusions of grandeur or
overkill, etc.

Alright...for all you afficionados et historians out there, just for fun:

What was the original name of the label started by Ivo-W R and Peter Kent we
now know eternally as 4AD? And *why* the change of name?

Answer in a couple of days. Hey, I'm pretty sure someone out there knows it
anyhow. :-)

That wretched, wretched thief. And, nay, that 'aint stealing!! Call it
claiming back what's rightfully yours! Oy.

And on another matter concerning the "Chains Unchanged" ep I wrote about a
couple of days back: four folks wrote me BC in response to that requesting
store info and perhaps even a small advance - you know who you folks are.
 :-)

Believe me, I *wouldn't* have a problem picking up the CD for anybody who
really wanted it (I know that feeling all too well). The problem is it may
be quite some time before I muster up enough courage (and moolah) to venture
into a music shop again. I'll certainly be on the lookout for you folks the
next time I go out (perhaps in a month or two...sorry I've got other
expensive interests other than 4ad). However...if you wanna be a step ahead
of me, here's help in another form.

Last time I was "out there", I saw the Japanese compilation in these 3

Pier Platters, Hoboken NJ:  (201) 795-9015 or (201) 795-4785;
Rockin' Rex, Yonkers NY:  call information (914) 555-1212;
Tower Records @ Lincoln Center, NYC:  call information (212) 555-1212;
Second Coming Records, NYC: call information (212) 555-1212.

Let yer fingers do da walkin' and good luck!

Unnecessary amusing postscript: Not too long ago, some AOLers were
privileged enough to sit in on a live chat forum with The Wolfgang Press. At
some point of the hour-long or so session, someone had bothered to ask them
"Do you guys do drugs and what kind?" to which they answered: "What kinds
have you got?"

Hee hee.

Ouch!!
I didn't realize that this 12" was that hard to come by, or that expensive.
Can someone list some other releases on 4AD, that fetch more than or around
$50? With exceptions to Lilliput, 13 yr itch, and Nature Mortes.

It was called AXIS I believe...if memory serves correctly.

I also think that it was changed because there was already another label with
that name... not sure if it was another UK label or what.

Also heard that 4AD was a play on the phrase "For A Day" which is usually how
long a new label typically lasted back in the early 80's.

Is anyone as huge a fan of RHP as I am? Been following them
since release of "Down Colorful Hill" in 1992. Mark's songs
have gotten less fuzzy over the course of 4 albums. Every
song is a unique experience. What do you think of the latest release,
"Ocean Beach"?
