Welcome to the Belly/Tanya Donelly Mailing List! This list is run by Wei Yeh in Austin, Sarah McHattie in Boston and Andrew Kieschnick in Austin. The purpose of this list is for the discussion of the career and work of Tanya Donelly and her current band, Belly. Tanya has an amazing talent and voice that is fundamental to the world of female rock of today. Tanya began her musical career as one of the founding members of Throwing Muses. During her six year stay with the Muses, Tanya was content to play second fiddle with only a couple of her songs on each Throwing Muses album. After creative disputes broke Tanya away from the Muses, she had a brief stint with the Breeders. However, Sire, Tanya's recording label refused to have one of their artists creatively writing for two bands at the same time, so Tanya played a secondary role in the band. It was around this time that Tanya met up with the Gorman brothers, Chris and Thom, who were in a local Newport band. The three decided to get together, and as a result, Belly was formed. Belly is the perfect band for Tanya starved fans. For years, they would always wish for more Tanya material on the Muses albums, and on the later Breeders release. Finally, a band where Tanya is the head of the band! Belly released their first album, Star in 1992. A college hit, it has broken gold since its release. Soon after Star was released, Fred Abong, who played bass on Star, left the band. The search was on for a new bass player. Soon, the search was over, and Gail Greenwood was the new addition to Belly. Gail brought a new look to Belly. With the addition of Gail, Tanya seemed more confident in her performances and also seemed to enjoy performing more. The newest album, King, was released on Valentine's day this year. Recorded in the Bahamas with Glyn Johns as producer, this album brought a different sound to Belly. With it, many more people discovered Tanya and Belly. Once again, welcome to the mailing list, and please enjoy the list...
