A band without logic, reason or rhyme. His Name Is Alive, the eccentric
band headed up by Warren Defever, not only throws the rulebook out the
window, but rips it to shreds before doing so. Their first album Livonia
was recorded on a four-track and is a mastery of minimalism in itself,
often amounting only to vocalist Karen Oliver's voice, a basic guitar melody
and another instrument. Home Is In Your Head came on as a group of acoustic
"fragments". It wasn't until the 11-song EP The Dirt Eaters and their
most recent 4AD album Mouth By Mouth that anything like a song started
to form, and even then they are often touched by odd effects and interesting
twists and turns. Most recently they released King Of Sweet, a limited
edition of 2000 released through the tiny Peridon Plastics label, although
they're not done with 4AD just yet. Get Mouth By Mouth and work backwards
from there--you might miss the point by starting with Livonia's sparse
atmospherics and the unfinished quality of HIIYH.
