For the uninitiated: Autechre are an incredible amazing ambient project on Warp, the world's first *perfect* recod label. :) They sound something like the Aphex Twin's "Polygon Window" project--ambience in a peaceful atmosphere with sinister overtones similar to the Reload album A Collection of Short Stories. Some Autechre songs are beautiful ...others are menacing and ominous. They are always catchy, and invoke (for me, anyway) an unusually wide array of emotions for electronic music. In that way, the only band I would say can outdo them is my personal fave, Black Dog Productions. Rhythmically they are similar, though Autechre has a very clean sound. It is this sterility which gives them much of the unique dread, hostility, regret, and urgency that sets them apart from other bands. I *highly* recommend them.
