A case of two cultures divided by a common language it appears. The
prefix cod- means a hoax or parody, being shortened from the English word
codswallop which means nonsense. Hence codpiece which is literally a parody
piece of a penis. Nothing to do with fish, although it's quite an apt
description of our several little skirmishes with Iceland since the war when the
might of the (civilian) Icelandic coastguard was too much for the British navy.
But I digress...

i gotta git with jens on this one. the song "rain"
is probably the finest work that daniel ash has
ever done on his own (songwriting alone). as jens
noted earlier, the willingness to experiment so
wildly is what distinguishes the tones on tail
from both bauhaus and love&rockets (who deserve
a little more credit than jens gives 'em imho).

can anyone explain, while we're at it, how beggars

i just saw the best goddamned movie i've ever seen (slight exaggeration there).
it's the gangsta rap parody called "fear of a black planet". from the opening
Snoop Froggy Frog video to the N.W.H. (niggaz with hats) reunion tour, this
movie had me shedding many tears of laughter. finally someone has been able to
succinctly, overtly, and humourously point out why so much of "urban" (but
really mall-rat fodder) music is a marketing farce. just look at any suburban
youth and you'll see the pervasive effects of the look-black-be-white fashion
scandal.
what, you may ask, does this have to do with 4ad? well i'll tell you.
nothing
absolutley, f*cking, nothing
(begin sarcasm mode)but i can now pat myself on the back for not falling into
the marketing traps of those ignorant white kids. after all, i really did need
to buy two singles for tishbite and all 54 lush singles. i ain't no fool.
ok, moral of the story; ain't none of us here too smart nor
independant-of-thought to occasionally be tricked by record company hype.

Basically, it's because of that song of theirs that I used to hear so often
on my local modern rock station (until I stopped listening, that is). The
title escapes me, but the song consists of annoying percussion + annoying
fuzz bass + annoying treated vocals going "yayayayayaya yaya ya" most of the
time.

Oh well, at least Daniel Ash was smart enough to stop being a goth.

4AD and CEC Management are devastated to announce the tragic news that
Chris Acland, Lush's drummer, sadly took his own life yesterday, October
17th.

Our deepest heartfelt sympathies are sent to Chris' family, friends and, of
course, Miki, Emma and Phil.

A statement regarding the band's future will be issued in due course.

Sorry to get all serious, but I heard on the radio about an hour ago that
Chris Ackland has killed himself. There were no details, apart from the
fact that it happened at his parent's home in the Lake District. I'm not a
Lush fan at all, but it got me feeling all serious, and I thought I'd pass
on the bad news.

That would be "Go". A friend of mine used to have the extended 12" remix
of this. Be very afraid. I think it's a fun goofy song (tho it gets old
fast) -- but -- it's very atypical of Tones On Tail. Sadly, it presages a
lot of the dreck that Love & Rockets produced. Overall Tones On Tail's
music was very playful, experimental, tongue-in-cheek, with lots of weird
sounds and effects. Try to find a used copy of "Night Music" (which
compiles nearly everything they released) and listen to "Lions", "Moment
Of Fear", "There's Only One", "Real Life", "Performance"... almost any of
it except "Go", "Christian Says" or the shite live version of "Heartbreak
Hotel" they inexplicably put on it instead of the sublime "Slender
Fungus".

from the NME web site

LUSH drummer Chris Acland was found dead at his parents home in
Cumbria on Thursday, October 17. He was found dead by his father; he had
hung himself. Chris, 30, was a founder member of the band; he had recently
returned from a US tour with the band and had said that he was unsure
whether to join them for forthcoming European dates. A session drummer had
been brought into the band to rehearse for those dates pending his
decision.

One close friend of Chris's who had spoken to him recently said: "If he
was depressed enough to do this, it must have happened very suddenly. He
seemed fine."

As NME went to press, the future plans of Lush were unclear. They are
still booked to play European dates and were due to enter the studio early
next year to begin work on a new album.

Full Obituary in next week's issue.

If anyone cares Lush's "Lovers of Today" is being sold at the
Netalog for $10.00. Anyone know which one this is?

Oh and where can I find Faye Wong music (is it like Celene Dion)?
I'm particularly interested in that cocteau cover she did though.

Chris

You were an inconceivably wonderful bloke.

I still can't believe this. It feels like one of those horrible bad dreams
that it is such a relief to wake up from. But it isn't , is it? I feel sick.

To Emma, Miki and Phil,

my most sincere and heartfelt sympathy and love

What a sad occasion. Chris always seemed to me like one of the chief
reason's for Lush's sense of fun.

Anyone have any background or further information? All I know is that he
wasn't keen to tour, and that the band had auditioned a touring drummer.

                        Matthew.
