this is in response to jill's question about lisa playing in
bloomington... sorry if someone's answered it already -- i'm on digest.
anyway, lisa basically flat out refuses to play in bloomington. i can
only think of one time she's played here in the past couple years... i'm
sure there have been other times, but not many. as for why, i'm not
sure. could be that, since many of her songs are autobiographical and
bloomington is a relatively small place, she doesn't want to perform them
in front of those they're written about. it might also be that
bloomington's not exactly a hot spot for thislisty type music, and so she
figures it isn't worth her while. in any case, her lack of enthusiasm
for playing to the hometown crowd is fairly well documented around here,
whatever her reasons may be...

The Church played here last night. Very much a retrospective, with only one
track from their new album "Magician amongst The Spirits" (which was ok on a
first listen - I don't have the cd). Kilbey's voice did not start out very well
- imagine standing listening to a live Church track and then suddenly these
hoarse croaky vocals cut in. However it did improve, despite the fact he looked
rather ill at times. Many of the songs were played with very long lead-ins or
just generally extended. A lot of stuff from Starfish, including a very rich
and full sounding Under The Milky Way. After hearing the track so many times,
the way it was played last night encouraged me to actualy pay attention to the
lyrics.
On 23 Sept Tom Weibrecht asked
>btw what happened to Hunters and Collectors.
Interesting to see them mentioned on this list, I wouldn't have thought they
would be of interest to people here. All I know is that they are playing here
in Canberra sometime soon with Died Pretty, so they must still be around.

All of the songs on the ep are different versions of songs on Happiness.
The version of Happiness on the ep is the super-extendo version. The
album version is only about half that long. The others are also quite
different from the album versions. Now buy Happiness!

Well, just like Sam Rothman as played by Robert DeNiro in "Casino" said,
"You can ask me anything!". To avoid the almost certain hype thats bound
to ensue, I'll tell you the news now... In a rash of muted media flurry,
I recently signed MYSELF to 4AD and the back cover of my first 7" will
feature a pic of my Mom and Dad righr after they signed the divorce
papers. In other news, I'm releasing the non-deluxe unlimited "cruddy"
version of "This Rimy River", which I painstakingly xeroxed onto the
least stable newsprint paper stock available. In an effort to save ink
and paper, the original pages have been reduced to one inch square areas
to make a hard-to-read six page bookle with smudgable ink qualities sure
to impress ink fans everywhere.

I swear this looks like Vaughan Oliver in a wig and fake stash. Seriously.
And seeing as how Vaughan is on crack, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised
if it was. The girl looks a bit like she might've been in the Last v23
calendar, but this is going only from my memory of it.
Of course, I may be waaaaaaaayyyyyy off...and no I don't have Vaughan

i was interviewing a band last year and at one point the lead singer
started talking about the hunt for a label...officials at virgin told the
band, "we could start you out on an indie label to give you some
credibility like we did with the pumpkins." i don't know if caroline is a
major-in-disguise, but they could have some sort of exclusivity-of-contract
agreement worked out w/virgin...

Well I've seen them (Thrush Puppies) a few times round and about
manchester and I think the Muses/BiT may be a bit generous. They were
great fun live and well worth catching, but the songs seemed fairly
basic punk/pop stuff. I haven't heard any recorded stuff though.
Rumour has it that someone from 4AD was at the Night and Day cafe to
see the band on who's name has totally escaped me (very good, gentle
semi accoustic songs, with slide guitar on some - swoon). I was there
to see Laudanum Split (nee' Crushed) who may have also created some
interest, or then again my friend Nigel could be fantasing again!

Agree totally on this. Some of the discordant bits reminded me of Ut
(off topic any info on Quint whatsoever to me please) but the whole
thing is very much in line with her previous stuff, if a lot more
sparse than the last LP.
Finally as I am having a crap time at work I treated myself to the
Muses 7" 'Ruthie' Knocking'. The etching is basically bits of the
design of the LP, skipping girl and what have you, all in a nice
chunky cardboard sleeve.
Well I am off to see Sidi Bou Said at the Roadhouse to see if they're
as goodlive as Melody Maker says, or as good as the Bodies LP.

I won't say 'one of the best' but he sure does know his way around on the
instrument. If only the music didn't suck... and the vocals... and the
lyrics... and the style... and the artwork...
Just kidding, I think it's the best 4AD product that's ever been released*
Will this live cd be the only Paladins release on 4AD or can we expect a
studio album as well?

Yes we know the site has not been updated in a long time. The reason for the
delay is that we are reconstructing the site. We have moved it to a
different server and we are changing a lot of the items in the site.
Basically we are trying to create an atmosphere that you would enjoy coming

The Lush promo tape has been claimed.
To the person who wanted the Arcana Books
phone number, it's 310-458-1499. When I got
my ltd. ed. v23 book a few weeks ago, they only
had a few left, and probably all are sold now.
But call them anyway and find out. The price was
something like $375-385 or just over $400 with
CA sales tax (I've tried to forget that part).

There was an article in an old Big Takeover that explained the SP-Caroline
thing. Apparently Gish wasn't doing well at first so Virgin gave Caroline
a HUGE amount of money to be used for their promotion. Suddenly we see
the Siva video on 120 minutes every week and it all begins to happen.
