Speaking of Bird Wood Cage, which I'll take along once I find a cozy
desert isle, has anybody had any luck finding other albums with the
menacing, dubby, sexy feel of this album? Parts of The The's Mind Bomb
and some G.Lewis-sung Wire come close, but I'd be most grateful if
somebody pointed my nose in likely directions.
Oh, by the way, for those of you who've yet to fall in love with your own
copy, Bird Wood Cage is the one where, having dropped their Public Image
and Talking Heads fixations like worn trousers, Micheal Allen & co. strip
down Stax soul and dreadsome dub to the bare flesh and swing their hips
about. They are among the very few white boys to understand funk.
Chumming with Al-Pook the destroyer...

My favorite is WHite Arcades, has the incredible intense yet hyponotic
stance. For what it is worth, I haven't picked up a single Budd CD or
collaborative that I didn't enjoy. KInda like that Laswellian
connection, anything so far they tough is good

Max,
Found the DCD 'Ubiquitous' 2-tr. and Liquorice 'Cheap Cuts' 5-tr. pro-cds.
So please delete from my wantlist. And if everything is right, the Lush
'When I Die' 3-tr. and 'Last Night' 6-tr. pro-cd's should be on the way to
Heiloo too, so the only 4AD USA promo CD I'm now still looking for is that
mysterious Lisa Germano 'Energy' 1-tr. pro-cd.

Kitchens of Distinction! i thought the reason they broke up was because i
was their only fan...
i think you're absolutely right about 'art' noise vs. 'commercial' noise.
when a group decides to make pop music, they seem to have to be willing
to be 'popular'---which usually means tailoring the music to the tastes
of that audience. as opposed to doing exactly what you want and not
giving a shit about sales or success. witness the difference between
the kitchens' "love is hell" album and thier latest release 'cowboys and
aliens'... the key for art-pop seems to be an ability to walk the line.
people were drawn to love is hell because it was strange, empassioned
swirly guitar rock with fascinating lyrics and catchy tunes. wasant even
available here in the usa for ages (one little indidan was their label).
then a major label release and a hit single (quick as rainbows). then a
taste of success, and an album even poppier (death of cool). finally,
they hire pascal gabriel to produce thier mainstream breakthru single
'now its time to say goodbye', and nobody's listening anymore... they
anticipated ride, slowdive, curve, my bloody valentine. had a dedicated
following. did something special. then tried to do make big money and
started to suck...
lush may be doing the same thing. same progression. unsatisfied with
marginal success and dedicated art-rock following, they become car
salespersons and start impersonating elastica.
...final analysis? art assults its audience. bends ears and eyes to its
point of view. pop placates its audience. complicity with the audience's
point of view.... the middle is difficult

Are there any Mazzy Star fans out there? If so, can anyone tell me when/if
they are releasing any new material?
On a 4AD note: I heard that Ivo kicked the Red House Painters off the label
because he didn't like Mark Kozolek's guitar solos. What a bloody fool! (Ivo
not Mark). Anyway, hope they find a new deal soon, they're far too good to be
thrown on the scrap heap.

Simon

I'll second that "won't light any fires." I bought the album, then
sold it back. I was very impressed with her work with Massive Attack
("Home of the Whale") and at Peter Gabriel's Real World (the traditional
"She Moved Through The Fair"), but the album _Spirit_ didn't do much for me
- and I do like William Orbit for _Strange Cargo III_ and remixes of
Peter Gabriel, Prince and Kraftwerk.
Just an opinion,
David.

What? Should not be the right place for Indochine here!
Nothing thislisty or interesting IMHO...
I used to like them when I was 12, but now!
Speaking of well known french bands, you should try
_Les Rita Mitsouko_, _Trisomie 21_, _The Little Rabbits_, _Dominique A_,
_Katerine_, and Jean-Louis Murat or Etienne Daho, yes,
... but definitly not Indochine.
Oh, definitly I do NOT want to start a flame; Pepe, email me privately if
you want to talk about french bands (altough I'm not a specialist).
Take care, 4AD fellows...

Should be backwards: on the CD, the LINEAR speed is constant...
So it's about 500 rpm in the beginning, and about 300 when it reaches the
outside.
2 lines on the FAQ should be nice, since this part of v23 artwork can
be found on many CDs... Sure Jens would add it if anyone write 2 lines
about that.
