Before everyone gets too excited, if you look a little closer at the ad, it
says something like "DJ Krush, DJ Spooky, Skylab along with special
performers from some Red Hot album which includes performances by" and then
lists all those other acts. I was fooled at first too but it still promises
to be a great show. Somewhat deceptive advertising though.

I completely agree with this. I bought Livonia when it first came out I
believe it was 1990 (Anyone to correct me?). And it does hold a very nostalgic
place in my head/heart. Like sean says, it was very different from anything
else in those days and hit a certain erie spot in me :)

hi. it's me, BiZ. i just recently got a job (actually, it doesn't pay) at
the arts desk at one of the school dailies (circ 25,000 maybe?). anyway,
i'm mostly going to be working with music. i talked to the music editor
today, and he's recently been trying to straighten the place out by
contacting record companies to get on promo mailing list and stuff.
one of the companies he's been having difficulty with is ol' 4ad, so if any
of you can give me the name of a reliable contact person at 4ad (Strick9?
can you help?), that'd be great. i'd also be interested in contacts from
bedazzled (steve?), american (for those too pure u.s. releases), kranky,

I heard the mistaken rumor of Ms. Fraser's passing over a year ago, just
after the release of Four Calender Cafe. I've been subsribed to this list
for less than a week -- so if the news were posted here, I wouldn't have seen
it. I also know now through responses from other friendly folk on this list,
that CT have been releasing work since then. If I do not follow CT as
closely as you would have me then you have my apologies. This "troll" has
been too busy lately investigating the wider world beyond 4AD -- Dorado,
Warp, Bellissima, Talkin' Loud, Nu Breed, etc. So for the record, the rumour
that I am a troll is TRUE!!
I also do not read NME or MM on a regular basis -- so feel free to fault me
for that!!
Sorry to be the instigator of your whiplash sarcasm, but as I understand it,

My point was that the micrometer/caliper thingy on the cover has the name
"Labradford" engraved on it as the brand name. Either the band futzed the
photograph (or had the name custom-engraved on a micrometer) or -- more
likely I think -- there is actually an instrument company called
Labradford that the band named themselves after. I haven't heard any
other explanation for their name.
By the way, a friend pointed out another non-lame scientifically-named
were mighty fine.) Actually he didn't directly point it out -- he was
wearing a tour t-shirt. Plate-o-shrimp time...

hi. the other day i saw chapterhouse's blood music again, except it was
packaged like an ep, had six tracks with funny names, and the entire thing
was remixed by global communication. blood music was a crap album, imo,
but the remixes on the original bonus disc weren't bad. question: is this
six-song remix album worth it? any g.c. remixes (including reload) i've
heard have been fab and i was very tempted to buy it. but there was other
stuff calling my name, so i avoided it -- perhaps temporarily.

Hoping to generate another discussion on the brilliance of Insides, I
have recently gotten ahold of two Earwig albums...'Past' and 'Under My
Skin I Am Laughing'. 'Past' has a date of 1992 on it, and I am
assuming it is their first release. It's a lot rougher than
'Euphoria', and relies more on guitars than drum loops. I think its
rather good, although I was surprised the first time I listened to it.
'Under My Skin...' was released in 1994, a year after 'Euphoria', and
to which it is very similar.
So, is this all that they have released? There have been several
discussions about Insides on this list before, but I don't remember
'Past' ever being mentioned.

I have been a long time admirer of the Cocteau Twins. Recently, I heard a
rumor that Elizabeth Frazer of Cocteau Twins passed away. Is this true?
About a year or so ago a friend of ours was watching one of those music
awards shows (maybe MTV) and one of the announcers dedicated something, or a
song, to "heaven's newest angel Elisabeth Fraser." What does that mean??
Maybe my frient misheard the announcer? I've always loved CT, even their
last album which was released about 2 years ago. Do you know anything about
this?
Has Cocteau Twins released anything recently? And are they still tied to
4AD? There last full length release was on Capitol?
P.S. what was the name of the graphic designer who did many of the early CT
releases. John something-or-other??

I am a hnia fan AND I agree completely with the things that have
been posted about 'livonia'. it does seem diconnected and pointless, but it
has it's moments of clarity(much like this post). Every time that I
listen to it, I end up thinking that perhaps that is what it is meant to
be like. With that in consideration, it is brilliant.
Most of the hnia releases follows on this same 'stream of
conciousness' feeling. I think that my fascination with them is 40%
continuous curiosity and 60% pure-unadulterated good feeling air pressure
changes in your ear canal.

here's an explanation.

sutherland later used the phrase "scene, but not herd" to describe the
then-emerging glam-rock band suede, which is how the above conversation
resulted. this was about a month or two after in ribbons came out, so the
guess is that sutherland saw the ps cd, then re-used the phrase as a sort
of self-parody.

It's a four song EP released in the US in December. It's as much a
Mark Clifford (Seefeel) project as a Cocteau Twins project, and is
thus the polar opposite of the acoustic Twinlights. If you like
ambient you should find it interesting. I didn't at first, but it's
grown on me, and I've come to love the hypnosis of "Seekers Who Are
Lovers", and the radiant opening of "Cherry Coloured Funk", at least.
The new album, "Milk & Kisses" is due in March, though someone posted
it's not to be released in the US until April. According to a review
by Mike Borum, it's superb.

For me, nearly the entire pleasure I got out of their
songs pre-Pygmalion was first and foremost the guitars.
The whole big, swirly, shoegazy mess. Morningrise!
She Calls! That's the sound I loved them dearly for. The vocals were fine,
but they must have been secondary to me, because Pygmalion
and the Mojave album don't affect me at all in the same way. <<
For me, the thing that set Slowdive apart from other shoegazers
was not only Neil Halstead's inventive guitar work, but the band's
beautiful and enchanting use of male-female unison vocals, drifting in
and out from between hefty slabs of flanging and chorus. The overall
effect of all this was, as we all know, wonderful!

After some thought about what e said, that RHP are essentially
about "whining and obsessing", I must disagree. After thinking through
RHP songs, I'd say that Mark never whines and almost never really
obsesses. If he does obsess, it's done with no small amount of subtlety.
His lyrics are usually quite emotional, but are also consistently
circumspect; that, I think, is the key word in describing his whole
demeanor as it comes across in the songs. I can still imagine someone
else holding a reasonable point of view that would see Mark in a somewhat
less positive light; this is just the way I see it.
I noticed that those who criticized HNIA used "Livonia" as their
basis for doing so; but I think "Livonia" is quite an imperfect album;
too embryonic to yield a full taste of their sound. "Home Is In Your
Head" is the definitive HNIA album, however, and I think it should
definitely be listened to, more than once, before one makes a final
judgment about HNIA. It is far more diverse but also more cohesive than
"Livonia", which by comparison does seem to "amount to little", even
though it does boast "How Ghosts Affect Relationships", which I think is
possibly HNIA's best (maybe 'incredible' would get the feeling across
better!) song. On the whole, "Livonia" finds Warren and Karin meandering
here and there, only dabbling in the first stages of experimentation,
efforts which were to come to full fruition in "Home Is In Your Head".
Nevertheless, "Livonia" is good, and is certainly more than "just noise".
As for "Mouth By Mouth", I don't have it yet (but I've ordered it
from CDNow, along with FB's "The Cult Of Ray", in defiance of
exhortations to not do so!), but from descriptions on this list, I have a
pretty good idea of what it's like, and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

If you like the global communication/reload sound, then the remix of Blood
Music (called Pentamerous Metamorphosis) should appeal to you. In my
opinion, it's a really good job. There's only a snippet of the original
song in each remix track, and the rest is pure g.c. -- smooth ambient
techno, a bit on the light side, but with lots of interesting stuff going
on.

This isn't quite the distinction it might be; the Bammies are pretty
suspect, having been bestowed by the bucketload on Bay Area luminaries
like Jefferson Starship, Santana, Journey and (shudder) the Dead. Even
through the '80s, when there were plenty of good bands like Romeo Void,
the Dead Kennedys, etc. that were more deserving. I think these days most
of the Bammies are pre-allocated to Counting Crows and Four Non Blondes.

Yeah, well I might quibble a bit here and there and I'm no great fan of any
of the groups I wouldn't quibble over but I think Jens has reasonably well
knocked my argument for six. So what does "Esplendor Geometrico" mean (any
Spanish experts out there)? Can I restrict my theory to groups named after
mathematical principles, axioms, laws etc? Can I exclude those group names
which have meaning to a layperson (e.g., "Hunters & Collectors") and/or
those group names which are pretty much part of common culture now (e.g.,
"Biosphere").

Ha, maybe you're right, but I don't see any marrying of scientific and
musical principles to produce great music. I'm not convinced "two
cultures" has anything to do with what I'm talking, half facetiously,
about. Jens, you me and C.P. Snow might bemoan the existence of two
cultures but you're surely not suggesting that science has much of a role
in the creation of great music, are you? I certainly don't mean to suggest
that scientists can't make good music (Brian May :-) though I imagine that
maybe that sort of mind set is less well suited than others.

That was a rerelease. Both the Earwig albums came out significantly
before they changed into Insides; I'm guessing 1991 or so. I have not in
fact heard either one of those albums, despite many recommendations.
Partly this is because "Euphoria", while it has its moments, is
cumulatively an album that really annoys me, for much the same reasons as
HNIA's "Livonia". Maybe I'll take a chance and buy one of the Earwig
albums used if I can ever find them.

That is exactly what i find with this album. I decided to pop it in again
and listen to it, maybe i was a bit harsh or something. But again i find
myself saying, noise...tho most of it is quite basic. But when for a whole
song, the lead sings in one note, a pretty bad one at that...monotony. Even
a song i HAD enjoyed when i first bought it, stank this time. :)
The pictures sure are purty...but oh well.

i put hnia albums on such a pedestal that i will
no listen to them passively. that is to say, when
i listen to one of their albums, i won't study or read
or do anything else that would distract me from concentrating
on the music. warren's use of channels and sonic distortion
is absolutely incredible. just the way that a repeated word changes
sound while still being the same word is compelling. for example,
the opening loop on livonia sounds like "jahwe jahwe" but changes
to "how do you how do you". way ahead of his time.
it seems to me that the doom generation soundtrack is just
some lame marketing device for an even lamer movie. all the
tracks are purported to be "new" or "unavailable". bullshit.
someone's just trying to get the old rarity juices flowing.
i just borrowed a friend's copy of the M/A/R/R/S single.
it kicks some serious booty. it was released here by 4th
and broadway, a subsidiary of island, methinks. is it still
available? i want my own damned copy! i had to buy the "my
stepmother is an alien" soundtrack to get the song when i was
a high schooler.

After reading the Charlatans mailing list for a while, and gathering
messages into digests for my own use, and receiving requests for them
from a bunch of people, I've finally set up a distribution list for the
Digest, with the consent from Eirik (who runs this live list).
The list is called "Then", and the administratrivia (ie. "Subscribe",
"Unsubscribe" and so on) address is:

It's not a "Daily" Digest. Rather, digests are sent out to the subscribers
when collected posts reach a size of about 40k. To this date there are

I have to chime in in defense of these bands...
OF COURSE obsessing is what RHP is about... but its wonderful. No he
doesn't whine, but it does take a little bit of investment from the
listener to get to a place where you can deal with the melancholy that
dominates these records. Once you can deal with that, they are really
wonderful things.
As for HNIA... I think all their albums are worthwhile... every on eof
them really 'pushes the envelope' as they say. I disagree that 'Livonia'
is 'imperfect and embryonic'. I think its a dark brooding masterpiece!
It is embryonic in the sense that its the first place that Wareren starts
playing around with the things that make a song go... but every time I
listen to this record its like a strange dream that hovers on the edge of
a really creepy nightmare and an oddly disturbing rainy afternoon,
trapped in my flat and in my head...
'Home is in yer Head', I always thought was a bit too scattered... but
there's gems in the dust.
Good luck finding 'Mouth by Mouth' in my opinion this record is their
best work. Mostly because they bring all their strangeness much closer to
the surface of a pop song and they really amke you aware of the way they
are questioning music.
BTW there's a bootleg disc out there that's called "King of Sweet" by HNIA...
if yer into them this is wonderful.. dark meandering revisions of lots of
their best...
I cant wait for Warren's forthcoming collaboration with Ian Masters!

they have numerous eps under the name earwig (sorry -- don't have any of
them) and a (temporary?) release on guernica called clearskin that no one
mentions very often even though it is absolutely brilliant. i think (not
sure on this one, anyone care to back me up?) it's temporary b/c the catalog
number starts with TU rather than GU, which is what the other guernica
releases have.
last i heard, vinyl ink had several of the earwig eps.

the album is called pentamorous metamorphisis. there are five tracks called
alpha phase, beta phase, gamma phase, delta phase, and epsilon phase and i
think are supposed to correspond to the 5 stages of sleep or something.
excellent ambient stuff with very little recognizable bits from the original
album. definitely worth it if you dig previous global communication and
FSOL-type stuff. oh yeah, it is a full-length clocking in at 60+ minutes.

I have listened to this disc a million times, but not heard those words.
I think their are just a very flip and very poignant take on the brit

I was looking through a local store's used CD section and found an advance
promo CD for a Willie Nelson tribute comp that features a Kelley Deal and
Kris Kristofferson (sp?) (!) duet! I didn't buy the CD, but I remember the
liner notes saying she was from Solid State (not the Breeders!) and courtesy
of Nice Records. I forgot what song she sang, too. But the CD features The

BTW, after about an hour of playing with it, it occured to me we're not
talking about a band with some kind publicity agenda, (LedZeppelin, Beatles)

curious so I hope other people will try to figure it out.

The lush commerical on Volkwagon is definitely positively sweetness and
light. Unless there are two (or more commercials), it is not superblast.

Anyone got a copy of this that they are interested in
selling. Also were there any specific videotapes with
HNIA videos only ever released, like a video album?
I am Quay-obsessed as of late. I am still looking for
some insight into the sources of the Bros. Quay's
typefaces used in the HNIA videos and their two
videos of short animated films. If anyone knows any
goof Czech typedesign book that may be good I would
also like to know about them.

i just heard it yesterday, and would add that it, sans locomotives, is
basically chamber music. very good, tho. the packaging is amazing, and as
much as i love v23, it is the best album packaging i have seen ever.
except for of course those crazy italian vinyl bootlegs with cheezy pics of
the artists (e.g. big hair'd cure circa 1987) on the vinyl.

...that happens to me all of the time. But not really in dreams because I
think I don't dream too much (I daydream a lot, though).
It usually happens when I am walking around and thinking about stuff and a
beautiful melody comes to my head and I try and repeat it over and over in
my head but something usually comes up and I forget it, which sucks.
...But then again, my guitar playing skills aren't as great as they can be
due to my procrastination, so that brings forth another complication. I
think I should play with my instrument more often [...the guitar, perverts].
Kinda dumb... I have two guitars, yet, I ain't worth shit when it comes to
playing it.....
.....bummer.

i was wondering if anyone knows anything about hannah marcus--her story her
discography whatever. i first discovered her in the RHP section of a music
store (her "Weeds and Lilies" cd on the Return to Sender label) because
Mark Kozelek plays on a couple of songs and i guess those goofy guys at the
music store figured no one would buy this disk for any other reason. which
was probably a prudent plan. i think this disk was released in 94 or 95.
Yesterday I found an ep by her "Demerol" on the Spirit label. It has two
songs from weeds and lilies (demerol and invisible bird) and two more
songs. This ep is from a 1993 session at Mobius in SF with Mark, but it
was released and copyrighted this year. It also mentions that alternate
versions of demerol and invisible bird appear on "river of darkness," an
album which i and the usually quite informed guys at my local music
addiction enabler had never heard of. anyway, hannah marcus is my fave
rave and i would appreciate any info. danke.

He's still around somewhere, last I heard (he said, cleverly talking about
himself in the third person).
Four thousand and eighty-two apologies for not having finished the poll off
this past weekend...I had good intentions, but studying for a grad exam,
coaching my wrestling team at states, and planning a new unit for 152 seventh
graders had to take priority. I promise I will have all the rest posted to

things, like Moon and the Melodies and Glyph (with Hector Zazou). But I am
interested in possibly picking up some of his other stuff. I am looking
for any info or comments that you may have, before I rush off and buy

Giant Sand seems to be a really cool concoction.
The only cut I have heard is off of the _Sweet Relief_ album -- that
benefit for Victoria Williams. It's one of the best songs on the album.
