Subject: Kim Deal is the center of the Universe

Some one suggested we try a rap group or some such, I can get as far as
the beatie boys through the Pump up the Volume Soundtrackand from there we
should be able to get the entire New York rap scene, which would tie in
most everywhere, that's as specific as I can get because I don't know that
much about rap groups,
but I can Tie her to bothe Metallica and NIN (not that I'd want to, except
to prove that Kim is truly the center of the universe):

Metallica and NiN we're both predominately featured at a laser light show
at the Planetarium in Minneapolis.(It's weak I know, but who would really
want to be linked to Nin or mettalica)
So were the beastie boys
the Beastie Boys were on the pump up the volume soundrack with the pixies
and *KIM DEAL*

Soundgarden was also featured in this show which along with the breeders
tour with Nirvana gives you the entire seattle grunge scene 9again I don't
really care enough about any of those bands to know the exact connections,
but I belive through Temple of the Dog we can get Alice in Chains (I'm not
positive about that) but we can get mother Love bone and Pearl Jam (YEACH!)
If you include the fact that the breeders toured in Lollapalloza you can
again link Kim to the beastie Boys as well as Smashing pumpkins(Again
Yeach) Perry Ferral and the whole Janes addiction/porno for pyros, I
believe there was another aold school rapper on that lolla tour, the guy
who sings free your mind and your ass will follow. I believe the
Pixies-camper von beetoven-cracker thing was already mentioned in an
earlier thread. They Might be Giants can be linked through their tour with
Frank Black. If we allow the Nin link from earlier Trent Reznor has worked
in Pigface which contains members of most every major industrial band and
several techno artists, including Al Jorgenson of Minnistry fame who also
produced the Revrend Horton Heat. That's all I can come up wiht off the top
of my head, sorry some of these are so vauge, can someone else fill in the
details?

Is this brilliant, or what:
Young MC and Kim Deal are both from the United States.
Funny how there's always a connection...
Seriously, though, when you start making connections like "B
covered a song by A", what you're basically saying is "B listens to A",
and that's not so impressive now, is it?

THE LATEST NEWS

Last week Congress approved sweeping restrictions on online speech and
conduct, imposing fines of $250,000 and jail sentences of 2 years for
anyone who makes "indecent" material available in a public forum online.

This legislation threatens the very existence of the Internet as a viable
means of free expression, education, and political discourse.

Despite loud objections from civil liberties groups and the public,
the measure is part of a massive telecommunications bill that President
Clinton has already pledged to sign. Although you should feel free to
continue to express your objections directly to the President, there are
other ways to express our outrage for this legislation. The President
is expected to sign this bill into law during the week of Feb 5-9, 1996.

For 48 hours after Clinton signs the Telecommunications Reform bill into law,
join hundreds of thousands of Internet users everywhere to show the far
reaching impact this bill will have on all Internet users. TURN YOUR
WORLD WIDE WEB PAGES BLACK with white lettering to demonstrate that the
Internet will not accept this kind of second class treatment from the
United States Government.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

1. For 48 hours after Clinton signs the net censorship language in the
Telecomm bill into law, TURN YOUR WORLD WIDE WEB PAGES BLACK with
white lettering. To know when the bill is signed, check these
   sources:

        Newsgroups: alt.society.civil-disob
Email:[email protected] (watch for mail on this list)
        WWW:http://www.vtw.org/
        Finger:[email protected]

You can also just watch CNN; they'll announce the signing of the bill.

To turn your pages black with white lettering, simply add the following
tag to your World Wide Web pages: (put these all in <>'s)

        BODY BGCOLOR="#000000" TEXT="#FFFFFF" link="0099ff" vlink="#00ff99"

Put this right after your tags, and before any tags.
To explain to people who may be confused by the color change, temporarily
add the following link to your page:

My World Wide Web Pages are
black for 48 hours to protest second-class treatment from the
US Government for free speech. Read about it at this WWW
                page.

   (Also put these in <>'s)

The Center for Democracy and Technology has also agreed to mirror a
   similar page at URL:http://www.cdt.org/speech.html

If your pages get lots of hits from services that cache their pages like
America Online, you may wish to start turning your pages black early.
Please try and wait though until Clinton signs the bill, for maximum
   effect.

Also, urge your Internet Provider and any Internet WWW pages you
frequent to turn their pages black. Send us interesting sites that
   comply to [email protected].

        $ Mail [email protected]
Subject: ZTV.COM is turning their pages black!

i've been listening to my st. etienne remixes disc a lot today (the one

movie," done by secret knowledge. when i thought about it, i realized that
i also have a remix of the boo radleys' "lazarus," done by the same
person/people.

does anyone have any info on this/these artist/artists? both remixes are
really good, and i'd like to hear more. . .

got my pentamorous metamorphosis today, so i'll be sending the address to

roomie's computer, and he's sleeping, and i'm leaving town to go to a

from "return of the jedi?" i would have picked it up in a heartbeat!
actually, i pretty much did anyway. . .

jesus christ (so he's not a musician. . .)to kim deal:

this can be done several ways, but here are a few.

big star (i think) did a tune called jesus christ
kristen hersh covered it on the holy single.
tonya donneley was in kristin hersh's band, "throwing muses."
t.d. was also in the breeders with kim deal.

jesus cured a leper named lazarus (if you believe the bible, anyway. . .)
the boo radleys wrote a song called lazarus, which appeared on the giant
steps lp
also on that lp was a song called, rodney king, which meriel barham of ps
did vocals.
ian masters, also of pale saints, is in a band with warren defaver called
esp summer.
the this mortal coil boxed set is dedicated to warren defaver.
tonya donneley and kristin hersh performed on (whatever) by tmc. (sorry, my
tmc knowledge is a little iffy.)
tonya donneley was in the breeders with kim deal.

who wants to try hasil atkins and kim deal?
barney to kim deal (doh! the boo radleys "barney and me," does the trick,
donnit?)
raffi to kim?
alanis morisette to kim (you knew it was coming, larry. . .)
the beegees?
dizzy gillespie?

that should keep ya'll busy. . .

i agree with you to an extent (kind of shoots my jesus christ one into the
ground, doesn't it?), but at the same time, almost anybody who's ever been
in lollapalooza could be linked to just about anyone else (cuz perry f runs
it, and he's connected to every year -- hence they're all connected. add
to that that rollerskate skinny -- jimi shields' band was in it one year,
which links him to kevin -- on to the folks in ear, and i'm sure there's a
glastonbury link in there somewhere. you could go a long way with that
one, and when you get to someone like lennon or macartney (sp?), you could
get to michael jackson, the king of pop (though i still think it's hasil
atkins. . .), then you could go through super bowl halftime shows to get to
dianna ross, and you could really go nuts after that. . .) so you see,
we're just saving space. :o

"Between happiness and a heartache", and there first one (self titled, I

looking either Breathless stuff (bootlegs, comps, etc..) or anything he
might have done with anyone else. He's got a killer voice.

I have a vague memory that the chick from Luscious Jackson who is now
going out with Josephine of the Breeders was a founding member of the
Beastie Boys back in '82 or so. Or am I thinking of the wrong person?

Also how about:
  Kim Deal
Kim Gordon (the other famous rock'n'roll bass-playing Kim)
Chuck D of Public Enemy (sang with Kim Gordon on Sonic Youth's "Kool

I've uploaded a new version of the FAQ. I think most of the information
is the same; the main thing I've done is replace the large tables of
track listings of the various comps, with simple links to the
indispensible Eyesore database. So the track listings are now in a much
more usable form (fully cross-referencd) and the FAQ file itself got
smaller.

The URL as always is:

    http://www.inow.com/~jens/Jens/4AD_FAQ.html

The FAQ's background is temporarily black in protest against the
unconstitutional freedom of speech restrictions imposed by the
newly-signed (US) telecom act.

And for connoisseurs of cute baby pictures, I've also uploaded a dozen
new pictures of my ultra-cute six-month-old son Jed:

That's funny, I've been thinking to myself that Jessamine are no Bowery
Electric. Maybe if Jessamine had better production (those drums are so
muffled) and no "cheezy" guitar solos. Plus the little tabs that hold the
disc in place in my Jessamine box were all broken, whereas the B.E.
package is pristine. (Hmm, maybe I should be writing for "Jewel Box

lime-green luminous triple-disc jewel box with a 75 page booklet they get
5 out of 5 stars!")

It seems to be the same deal as with any other record company.

Yes, or Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, all
English-speaking countries in Africa and the Caribbean, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Guyana, the Falkland Islands, all former British colonies in the
Pacific, etc. Basically anywhere where they speak English that isn't the US
or its territories. I'm not sure where Jens was pretending to be from.

And if the Americans can spell "criticise" as "criticize", why aren't they
consistent enough to do the same with "advertise"?

Crossover time...

Kevin Bacon ---> Kim Deal

Kevin Bacon was in "Tremors" with Fred Ward, who was in "Henry & June"
with Uma Thurman, who was in "Pulp Fiction" with John Travolta, who is in
"Broken Arrow" with Christian Slater, who was in (as we all know by now)
"Pump up the Volume" with a lovely slow rendition of 'Wave of Mutilation'
by the Pixies, who boast the insetimable former Mrs. John Murphy as their
bass player extraordinaire.

I thought of one for ABBA.

ABBA recorded the song "Knowing Me, Knowing You."
"Knowing Me, Knowing You" is oftentimes performed by Evan Dando on radio
shows and during live acoustic shows.
Evan Dando has a cover of "The Ballad of El Goodo" on the EMPIRE RECORDS
        soundtrack.
Also on the EMPIRE RECORDS soundtrack is the band the Martinis.
The Martinis has as a member Joey Santiago.
Joey Santiago used to be in the Pixies.
Also in the Pixies was KIM DEAL.

Ok ... as much as I've been grumbling over this lengthy thread ... I
couldn't resist the challenge.

Abba recorded Dancing Queen.
U2 covered Dancing Queen on the Zooropa Tour.
The Pixies opened for U2.

side two has Fortunately Gone and Do You Love Me Now?. It then says BREEDING

VINYL, ITALIA all also on thin blue cardboard and Black ink. The Record itself
is a pea-soup green-

First off, the Idea of this whole thing is really a test of music knowle
ge, and a fun thing to do to
some people. The goal is to use stable links, like recordings and I'm not sure
f distant links, such as
the following should be included:

PEARL JAM ~ KIM DEAL
pearl jam has done videos and they are shown on MTV. Alot of people watch MTV a
d It's a pretty
good bet that someone who has seen a pearl jam video might have seen cannonball
y the breeders
also on mtv, they're both videos, they both have albums, .....etc. thus kim deal
and Eddie vedder are
second cousins......etc.(not really)

I could just as easily say, I listen to them both. that's no fun. I'm also not
sure about compilation
albums lie the pump up the volume soundtrack. I guess the closer and the more r
lative, the better.
Or I could just be full of shit, anyways

Flea [played bass on "You Oughta Know"]
The Red Hot Chili Peppers [Flea's band]
Lollapalooza
The Breeders
Kim Deal

Of course I'm not sure whether both bands played the big L the same year.

I have a pretty weak one for John Coltrane, since the Boo Radley's album
"Giant Steps" was named after a 'Trane album of the same name, but I
think these "inspired by" or "covered this song" links are kinda lame.

What we need is a database where we can associate each person/band with
their first level links, then have an algorithm grind through and find
the shortest path between anyone we want. This should just be a trivial
modification of Eyesore, right Lars? ;-)

There are two very worthwhile shows happening
this weekend.

Shows usually start at 8 or 9, so call them for info.
Girl vocalist, the usual guitar textures that our label
goes for (pick your favorite term, I have no problems
with any of them: "ethereal", "blissful", "swirling"),
and lots of spunky energy.

which I'm told is right near Rhino. Take Indian Hill
to the center of Claremont, and I believe it's on
Yale.

Next week Parasol is going to get a bunch of our CDs,
so if you'd prefer to order from them, there's your chance.

ABBA to Kim Deal

there is a band from australia named Bjorn Again and they are an ABBA tribute ba
d. Bjorn Again
opened for Nirvana at reading festival, The Breeders opened for Nivana as well i
 the early stages
after Last Splash was released... It just accured to me that you can link any ba
d really to any other
band. Example: Bill Hailey and The Comets to NIN. bill hailey did rock around
he clock, rock
around the clock was often times played on the show happy days, penny marshal, l
vern of lavern
and shirley, had several cameo appearances on happy days. penny marshal's fathe
 helped to
direct and produce the movie Tiger Of Warsaw. that movie features a scene shot
n the Mercer
diner, trent reznor is from mercer and his father owns reznor electric, which di
 the wiring for that
diner. As a matter of fact, I worked for reznor plumbing and heating, which is
rent's cousin's
buisness, and I go to allegheny college where trent went for one year and where
is twin cousin still
go. therefore, I'm linked to abba....I think it's getting out of hand, however
his is all true. Anyway,
bye.

John Coltrane played with Miles Davis
Miles played with Sting on "You're Under Arrest"
Sting had Branford Marsalis in his band
Branford played with Chuck D of Public Enemy
Chuck D has rapped with KRS-ONE
KRS-ONE rapped on REM's "Radio Song"
then its just Stipe to Hersh to Donnelly to Deal

Linking Kim Deal with Trane and Miles opens up a billion more
possibilities, like Kim and Ravi Shankar....

Of course, there's always the heroin habit that Kim and Trane have in
common.
