So you're not alone. - Dez PS If anyone is thinking on getting Volume 15 solely on the strength of the Cocteau Twins track - don't bother. It's one of the worst tracks on there. So predictable, so tedious, so damned irritating. Split up - you're making fools of yourselves. The rest of the CD is pretty good though, particularly the tracks by Solid and Joi (mixed by Spring Heel Jack). The Scheer track is pretty ordinary (ie 50 times better than the Cocteau Twins track) Soundtrack to life - Moloko - Dominoid; Tortoise - Djed; LFO - Kombat Drinking; ROC - X-Line; Disco Inferno - Lost In Fog

Apart from the messy Cantara, which is it's only >downpoint for me, the whole glow of this album hits me for six everytime. 'Fraid I'll have to come to His Meekness' defense here -- I felt it imperative urge to jump in when "Toward The Within" is cited as one of 4AD's top 2-3 records, and then "Cantara" is slammed. "Cantara" had always glowingly been the best part of that live album IMO, one of the album's few redeeming features. Messy? Try unique, non-formulaic, visionary. i.e. the song progresses ethereally towards a climax very unlike most western song structure. And unlike Brendon's formulaic folkish tunes on there. (Check out the original -- more subdued, but also powerful.) Certainly I'm not saying that my tastes are "right," and Andrew's "wrong"; (one feels the need to disclaimer-ly acknowledge plurality and relativity...) it just drives in deeper the fact that opinions on this list can be _so_ different, sometimes evenly opposite on broad topics. (I still think it can usually be boiled down to one main dichotomy of fans...) Also, though I shouldn't speak for Einexile, I think that to what extend his posts are "supercilious," they are so in a more tongue-in-cheek tone than some people are interpreting. (correct me if ah'm wrong, e) At least for myself, I enjoy e's posts and the ensuing kicked-up-dust. different animals. The first, more surreal, otherworldly; the second, more earthly and accessible. I like it all ('cept for ditties like "American Girl"), but prefer -- and miss -- the former. + + + + + + Thom S. Could Parasol, Vinyl Ink and/or EAR/Rational should have it. Phone numbers for the first two and a Web page for the latter are in the FAQ: Parasol 202 S. First Champaign, IL 61820 USA (217) 355-2555 Vinyl Ink 955 Bonifant St. Silver Spring, MD 20910 USA (301) 588-4695 EAR/Rational http://www.xmission.com/~ear/ I just bought it for $15 (ick) at Tower. Mail order is fun but sometimes I just have to hold the thing in my hands before I can figure out if I want it. While I'm on the subject, there is much more than a hint of "Garlands"-era Cocteau Twins in their sound too, and maybe some of Opal's spacier moments. Buy now! __________ Jens Alfke __________________ jens@mooseyard.com ________________________________________ He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth 'Cause he knows there's no such thing.
I've also listened to this 3 times so far, and I'd actually like to withdraw some of my first impressions. It IS the least good Frank Black album, no doubt about that. However, I still find it fairly entertaining, and I think I will enjoy it more with time. There is something about this album that suggests Frank still knows what he's doing, even if he chooses to convey a contrary impression. This would be in keeping with his well-known "contempt for his audience". Anyway, You've gotta love that instrumental rave-up "Mosh, Don't Pass The Guy". At least I do. The chord changes are pure genius.
In which Jens reviews ---> BOWERY ELECTRIC s/t album (Kranky) WHEREAS I speak as someone who was immediately amazed and permanently rearranged by Slowdive's first single ("Slowdive/Avalyn/Avalyn2"), and WHEREAS I have been known to leave said CD-single on auto-repeat for hours, and WHEREAS I was mildly disappointed by everything else Slowdive ever did except for the sublime but oh-so-different "Pygmalion", THEREFORE BE IT KNOWN that Bowery Electric's album is everything I ever wanted Slowdive to be based on that first single. (And it's almost 3 times as long!) Song structure? Progression? Bowery Electric prove without doubt* that you don't need them if you just pile on enough hyperspatially-flanged guitar whooshing and fuzzed out basslines. And I mean that most making my internal organs pop with delight and bliss. This is the best thing I've ever heard on Kranky and that includes both Labradford albums as well as Jessamine. I want to thank the 4AD-L people who reviewed this and inculcated the name into my subconscious. Now I backpedal a few steps and say that this is no mere Slowdive knockoff, the actual guitar sounds are quite different (mostly this flanged haze that displays very little variation from moment to moment but whose sound is complex enough to stay interesting), there is no use of harmony in the vocals, and the overall effect is much more ambient than all but Slowdive's first and last releases. But Slowdive are an obvious influence of theirs and Bowery Electric's trance-inducing opiate effect picks up perfectly from where they left off. I've gotten mildly tired of dreampop/shoegazer music and its by-now cliches, and have tossed plenty of lame wannabes out of my discman, but Bowery Electric are a joy. * some irony should be read into this phrase in light of previous review-flames. __________ Jens Alfke __________________ jens@mooseyard.com ________________________________________ He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth 'Cause he knows there's no such thing.

Hello Everyone, As mentioned before, the cocteau twins are finally having that internet chat session. the time is 430pm PST and it's sponsored by Hotwired. So go to www.hotwired.com now and register for this event. There will be a transcript of the session and pictures of the event at the web site if you happen to miss the event. However, I believe they will also be using Real Audio to broadcast some clips from the new album! So, I'll see you there! jack b huynh jhuy@garnet.berkeley.edu
Hi All This my first attempt at a send so please forgive me if this goes haywire... I have also not been keeping a particularly close eye on the listserv stuff, exams to fail instead etx getting in the way so if this is old news then I also apologise for that. That's enough fawning for now so on with the story. I have noticed many people talking about the film 'Baraka' and where it can be obtained from. On wandering aimlessly (heading for a pub, actually) through the Picadilly Circus area of London I took a minor diversion into HMV - Trocadero (I don't know why either). Amongst the various other humerous 'bargains' piled up in the sale were many copies of Baraka, down from 17 pounds to 10.99. If anyone is interested it shouldn't be too difficult to get a copy as there were shitloads dotted about the place: Street level in the bargainy bit, upstairs in the Films section etc. That's about it... I think it's about time I brought up the fact that it's been a hell of a long time since the last issue of Dewdrops came out. Wasn't it August, or something? Whatever it was, I wanted to assure everyone who has a current subscription that I haven't forgotten you. The next issue (#15) is well under way, half of the reviews are written, I have an interview with Astrobrite done, and one or two more interviews are planned. Inevitable delays have been cropping up, involving some upcoming changes in staff, but it really shouldn't be too much longer until #15 is done. The next issue after that will feature some new faces, new writers, a new "corporate identity" and other changes. It's bound to be exciting! More details are coming up in a month or two. In the meantime, one of the interviews I've just set up is with Daniel Figgis. Who's that, you say? Ages ago I posted a review of his album Skipper, which is on Rough Trade. If not for the fact that it was released in 1994, it would have topped my Albums Of The Year list. I won't waste space by posting the review again, but it'll end up linked to my web page by the weekend. I think there is only one person on this list besides me who has even heard this album, but I thought I'd ask for input anyway. And for this one person (you know who you are!) the good news is that Mr. Figgis is working on a new release for the Big Cat label. er, don't know any more details. all i did is copy the information out of the british music press which didn't list us dates (hardly surprising really). anyway, i went the extra mile and, from the stereolab web page, news >From Martin at Duophonic 19-Jan-96: The new single Cybele's Reverie released in the UK on Feb 19th. The new LP Emperor Tomato Ketchup has a UK release date of 11th March and probably about 3 weeks later in the US. Hopefully there will be a US vinyl edition this time - not imported. The UK tour should start on Feb 27th through to March 14th. Tortoise will support on all the dates and Broadcast will be added to the bill for the London show. European, Japanese and US dates will follow during April and May. The band are recording a John Peel session in the next few weeks broadcast date is unknown at the moment. (it's 24th feb and guest stars sonic boom by all accounts - acd) There will be a new Lab Report out soon so if anyone wants a copy then please send two International Reply Coupons [IRCs] to the PO Box Number. (which is DUOPHONIC/Martin, P.O. Box 3787, London, SE22 9DZ, ENGLAND) ok, stereolab page for those of you who don't know is it's an unofficial page but it's well supported and martin duophonic knows about it and is pretty forthcoming with his information. (beware though that robin, the site maintainer, is away for the next month and a half and probably won't reply for a while) martin duophonic's email address is 101375.1545@compuserve.com but i guess he won't be too happy to be bombarded for information he probably doesn't know so use some discretion. -- andyx (a.dean@uk22p.bull.co.uk)

hello hello! i would love to swap tapes. i can send you one this weekend, if you send me your address. we don't have a name as of yet, because we had to reform (two new members). but one of our new guitarist is amazing, making the tape sound even worse compared to us live. hehe. i'm pretty sure that we are going to call it Splashdown though. eeeeek, please please please keep in mind about what i told you about the cheese factor. ie. producer's added touches, and the fact he made us record our four poppiest numbers. oh yeah, anyway my address is: bobb Pietrusko 810 W. Are the new LFO and Nick Cave out now or are people talking about advance copies they are somehow getting a hold of? Does LFO have a licensing agreement with some company here in the states or will I have to pay hefty import prices? Thanks, David.
i kinda get an earache from the Single Girl version of Tinkerbell, (although i'm used to it now) but the Volume version is beautiful in comparison. i didn't like it much before, but in comparison, i'm kinda grateful. :) lushislor > p.p.s. anyone else think tinkerbell was one of the worst tracks lush > ever put out. twice?! >
i have In Pine Effect! It's a great album- it's very different from your average trance/techno album...it's almost got jungle influences, but then comes off as too electronic to be jungle. i got it at the Heathrow airport right before i flew back to new york because i didn't know it was available in the us- i'd never been able to find u-ziq here before- but they have it at mondo kim's for like $8. i got it for the only song i knew on it, called "Roy Castle," which is the prettiest climactic electro dance song......... *lorelei
