Finally bought a used copy of Sheer's self-titled new album. Wait a little
more, pay a little less... and thank God I did. The sound is general 4AD
guitar swirls, yet powerful enough to catch your attention and be a
contender for power-chords weekly. My only bone with this band is its
patented ripoff of The Breeders. As you all know, I hate Ivo for his
recent placement/displacement of new 4AD bands, especially RHP. Here, Ivo
must take responsibility for not changing the sound of Sheer enough to
invoke a "new" band sound to them. Instead, we receive a clone of once was
and already done ala Da Breeders. I give Sheer 3 out of 5 stars. Over all
they Sheer sound good.

BEL CANTO APPEARS ON ECHOES
The Norwegian group, Bel Canto, will appear in a feature on
Echoes, the nightly music soundscape heard on over 130 radio
stations in the United States. The interview will air on
February 28th, and that following weekend on selected stations.
Bel Canto is Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen who came
together in Tromso, Norway, north of the Arctic circle.
They've created an ethereal brand of music that is sometimes
tribal, sometimes techno and often both. But it's all
centered by the amazing voice of Anneli Drecker. They have
four albums, "White Out Conditions", "Bird of Passage,"
"Shimmering, Warm & Bright" and coming on February 27th,
"The Magic Box." On Echoes, Anneli and Nils talk about
making music in the land of the Midnight Sun, and how recent
parenthood has changed their music on their latest CD.
Coming up in March, Bel Canto will be playing live in an

The EP in question is called 'Hibernation Shock,' and it will be released on
Farrago within the next two months. We're hashing out the details of
getting the sleeves printed, and that's the last hurdle before everything
goes to the pressing plant.

A bit of trivia---
Before Michael Plaster started doing Soul Whirling Somewhere
he was in a band called Firecracker who did a cover of
His Name Is Alive's "There's Something Between Us...".
It's one of the very short songs on Home Is In Your Head,
but Firecracker extended it to several minutes with lyrics
supplied by Mr. Defever himself. This ended up on the 4AD
tribute we put out in 1993.

Having read all this HNIA stuff for the past 4 days, I just had to run and
listen to the 3 of them. I bought Livonia and HIIYH when they came out (in
the US) in 1991. For the things i heard back then, It was supposed to be a
new kind of TMC... talk about a mislead!
To be honest neither one thilled me that much... apart from some tracks on
HIIYH. I completely disliked Livonia, It just sounded so pointless.
Now, 5 years later my opinions have (mostly) changed: I still think Livonia
is pointless, there=B4s no use in owning it (anyone wants to trade...US
version with the extra track); but HIIYH is an *EXCELLENT* disc (US
version). It sounds very coherent and very beautiful. I just love the noise
and then the softness of songs as 'Chances are we are mad'. It is, without a
doubt, the best of the 3. MBM is good (especially Blue Moon).

No. I think they will undoubtedly snap out of it, though I wonder whether
or not they will stay together. Both Emma and Miki can write tremendous
songs, and have been doing so for too long that they would both just
cease al of a sudden. I think it is something in the chemistry, or else
someone Got To Them. Whatever the case, this reminds me a lot of what
happened to Verve. If I had to predict, I'd say Lush will break apart,
Emma will start a new band which 4AD will sign and which will be good,
and Miki will have her own band, also very good but rejected by 4AD and
eventually she will flake out and stop releasing records for Sony,
Capitol, Caroline, or whomever.

well first off, i should mention that their new material is a slight
departure from previous endeavours...
but here's a brief description of the tapes I have available:
A General letter sent to all interested in the Defever-fest tapes:
During the holiday season here in Detroit, Warren in his infinite genius
decided to throw a "noise festival" with a bunch of Michigan-noise bands ---
some of which he has ties to. Most of which are also on the Time Stereo
label which he dabbles in (his friend Davin and Kenny, both co-members of
Princess Dragon-Mom with Warren actually run it).
Anyhow, the fest spanned practically an entire week, and across 2 clubs. I
was fortunate enought to get the really good ones on 2 different nights on
tape... this is from I've heard from other list members anyway, and my own
personal view.
The first night featured and new Time Stereo band (relatively) called 'the
ohms' which is basically noise, and Monster Island which were surprisingly
good - hard to compare to anything though. That evening also produced Asha
Vida which I wasn't to impressed by but other list members seem to like them
alot...and finally 'ESP-Beetles' with Warren, Davin, and anotherfriend of
theirs who's name escapes me for the moment.
The next evening I taped, I arrived a little late (thanks to work) and just
caught the last 10 minutes of Astrobite (but not on tape)..they were so-so.
Same as Asha Vida...most other list members like it alot. The ones I did
catch on tape were Monaural...kind of a cross between Cocteau's and
ESP-Beetles...that's about the best comparison I can do now....they're noisy,
but with the dreamy effect. Then came (what I'm assuming was) ESP-Family. A
bunch of Warren's friends gathered on the stage and began playing
noise-schtuff while Davin hung an a tri-colored flag up behind them all
(which also appeared at the ESP-Beetles show) with "ESP" on it. It also
sounds strikingly similar to the ESP-Family tape. 10 minutes after they
began Karin stepped out and began whispering into the mic... and gradually
after a minute or 2 died and they left (except Karin) and then Warren and
Trey stepped out with one of the guys who had appeared in Monster Island the
week before..never got his name. 40 minutes of bliss let me tell you!!!!!!
They have quite a piece of work coming... all they played were new songs,
never once drifting back into the annals (sp?) of Livonia HIIYH or MbM.
I'm selling the tapes as:
Tape#1 "The Warren Special" (all the bands Warren appears in during the fest
- with the exception of PD-M that I missed due to illness)

I'm asking $7 for each tape ($2 for the tape -- a TDK HIGH-BIAS SA100 --- not
a cheapo Memorex, $1.50 mailing, $2 for Warren (I wouldn't jilt him, he
deserves it, besides he's a friend - and it makes all this legal!, $1.50 for
taking and hour-and-a-half to dub the tape and printing of cover for the tape
(nothing special mind you, but still it's better than the one you get with a
tape!)
Or if you choose, you can send your own tape and $5... all I ask is that the
tape you send is at least a 100min tape (50min each side) as some of the
bands performances run 45-47 minutes long.
I'm going to be honest with you all, these are NOT DAT quality recordings.
However, I have picked up boots copies of concerts on tape before at record
shows of DCD, the Cocteaux, etc. and I do think that the quality recording I
have is far better than the one you'll find at such shows.
Not to mention this will give you all a sneaky-peek 5 months (??) into the
future as to what the new hnia will sound like!!

for 1st class.... oh well...looks like i'm making only $1.25 for close to 2
hours work per tape....!!!! so as you can see, i'm not really making much on
the tapes at all. someone should really raise minimum wage!! ;) ah, for the
love of music!!

Lush are crap.
Single girl. Essentially a Billy Joel song, with an ugly, cheezy chorus
out of some song written for a seventies Neil Simon movie. It is played
in the style of the more obnoxious, less remembered Scene colleagues from
Lush's youth. There is an uninspired Mary Chain solo. The song sounds
like shit; much of the time you can't tell what the hell's happening.
Tinkerbell is not worth discussing, really. There's an ugly, repeating
recorder melody that belongs in some sixties folk music or in a really
bad Current 93 performance, a bassline that consists of two notes; it
switches between at random. There is no discernable vocal melody.
Outside World means don't give Lush an acoustic guitar. The result of
this mistake is a song with no soul or rhythm. As a song, it is as
predictable as they come, the vocals are off--as in off-pitch--and
there's another awful guitar solo. No wonder the British music press are
looking favorably upon this band again! In the end, what you have here
sounds like someone making fun of Wish-era Cure, and that result poisoned
by Lush's quirky chord changes which no longer have any character or
design and so sound more like Enya than Lush.
Cul de Sac sounds like Phillip King just doesn't get it. It's an ugly
instrumental that tries to mix lounge-jazzy dominant seventh shit with
muzak and dissonance and the mixture is horrid, lifeless, and stupid.
Laughable, really, but better than the previous two songs so give the guy
some credit for saving the single.
I thought someone said Chris Acland wrote a song for one of these eps?
Nope.
Single Girl. The exact same version, I guess. Did I mention that the
lyrics are embarrassing? "Don't wanna talk to myself again tonight," she
says. PLEASE. This entire set of singles is Lush talking to themselves,
in the most biblical sense of the expression. At least the track kind of
rocks and reminds me of Lush.
Pudding. Why name a song Pudding? I can think of better things to feed
these people. The song at least *sounds* good, but in its attempt to be
a cheeky country song while imitating previous Lush songs, it becomes
obnoxious. The singing is wrong again and the verse melody is this hokey,
high pitched cowboy stuff. Reminds me a little of Thanatos, actually.
Demystification is not a Lush song, but they did play it so I blame them
for it. Can you imagine the music of Phoebe from "Friends" adapted for a
silly Japanese powered-armor cartoon? Well there you go. It sounds
EXACTLY like that, and this is NOT a joke.
Shut Up suffers from easily the worst case of poor singing in the whole
batch--enough that I can't fathom how 4AD allowed this to be released.
For what it's worth, the song is a step or two better than anything else
here. The biggest problem with the track is again the undead guitar
strumming.
Please don't infer from the subject header that these singles are in any
way as good as Shining Road. The Cranes have taken a big fall but not
like this one. This single is a fucking disaster, I can't believe 4AD
would release something this awful even in this era of Ocean Beach and
Within the Toward, and I'm sure as hell not buying the album without
hearing it first. All the way through and some change. How thoroughly
depressing.

Looks like nobody provided you Paul with anything but discussion about
different funny scientific names.
OK, right now I don't have it nearby (a friend borrowed it quite a long
time ago actually) but I'd recommended it to all whom DCD-ish type of music
may concern. In fact, it's unlikely to be another DCD ripoff (like, say, Eden
- I have nothing against Eden though, mind you) as all musicians invloved
are to one or another degree Persian born people and hence inherited
great deal of skill in performing Persian folk music. There are almost
exclusively Persian instruments played (+guitar mebbe - I can't recall
exactly), but the album delivers quite modern sound. I can distinguish
pure folk and modern music with elements of folk, so there you'll find
not pure folk. It's by all means is pretty nice work, it bears many
memorable melodies and rich sound textures. I honestly recommend it to
all DCD fans, most likely you won't be disappointed. Back in '95 I even
managed to tape it and sent out to another 4ad listie, Boroda - perhaps
he could comment on it, too (he's been silent for quite a long time though,
seems to be dead busy).
The label, X.25 (yeah, they've got remarkable name :) - they put it as X dot

I'm gonna have to come flat out and admit that it's just an irrational
prejudice I have. I'm not familiar with Wallace Stevens, but I'm sad to
say that a band called "Ode to Gromit" would probably stand a much better
chance of worming their way into my affections that the "The Sylow-Lagrange

I think you're right. Ultimately, there is only *one* culture. It can
just take quite a time for it to fuse together.

echoes is on between 1-3am (mon-fri) in nyc. LG's show was on the 23rd of

actually, chris acland DID write a song for single girl- it's called
"sweetie" and it's the b-side to the single girl 7". it's okay...
plus supposedly phil wrote another instrumental for an upcoming single.
i rather like the loungy tunes, they're better than well, i won't put
lush down but cul de sac is one of the cooler new tracks.

I'd like to thank Dmitri for the information on Axiom of Choice.Though
I enjoyed the discussion of scientific names, I'd almost given up
hope. The URL he gave (http://www.xdot25.com) is correct, and they
even have a couple of ( I thought, quite impressive) samples from the
album. The funniest thing is that their Director of Tehran Operations
has an account on America Online, the Great Satan of online services.
Anyway, I'm ordering the album so I'll post another review after I get

I couldn't understand why everyone was saying that Lush is now trying to
be Elastica, blah blah blah, until I heard Ladykillers.
Whether it sounds like Elastica or not is irrelevant. It is a great
song. It's classic. AND I'm glad it's a (kind of) different sound for
Lush.
BUT
If you listen to Last Night or either of the Single Girl eps, I doubt
you'll think THEY sound like Elastica songs.
This is just like when the Tipp City ep came out. Everyone said 'The
Amps suck' until they heard the album. Suddenly the biggest bashers were
now the biggest fans.
For those who say that Lush now sucks because you think they sound like
Elastica, I wonder how long it's gonna take you to eat crow once the
album is released.... huh?

But for the past albums, I have to say that Spooky IS the weakest of them
all, while Split IS THEIR BEST ALBUM EVER (I just love When I Die and Kiss

Thanks, it really does make me wonder.
But i can't believe that he did NOT know that it was a stock
christian religious phrase. If he didn't know it originally, i'm sure he
found out rather quickly (perhaps even before getting signed). Makes me
wonder whether the christian connotation was the original reason for the
name but he had a change of heart and wanted to obfuscate the matter by
creating a new story (one that he may even stick to over an extended period
of time).
When i first saw Livonia by His Name is Alive i said, "Hmmm? Ivo
is releasing a christian band on 4AD?" And it was not until this thread
began that i thought it could be anything other than an affirmation of
faith (whether of a traditional sort or a unconventional type).

the concensus amongst us HNiA devotees). Livonia seemed even better in
conjunction with HiiYH. The Dirt Eaters EP was a joy too but it was not
until MbM that they fell from grace in my eyes. MbM was such a huge let
down after HiiYH (sure it has a few gems but ... ). It seemed that they
began to embrace the true evil of "normalcy." Ack! I only hope the new
album brings them in a different direction.
