No it is not racism. A person chooses to use the AOL service. One does

hey everyone!!

just got home a little while ago from seeing sonic youth, the amps, and
bikini kill at the hollywood palladium...all were amazing especially
bikini kill...kathleen hanna has a very energetic and strong presence and
a great big voice.

when sonic youth were on, kim deal came out into the audience where i
said hi and talked to her a little and told her that "pacer" was a pretty
good album and she said thanks for the support and that she appreciated
it...also in the audienc was, i could've sworn was frank black...a few
others thought so too but no one said anything and i didn't either. oh
well!

laters!

p.s. have any of you heard of a band called, emily's sassy lime? they
are playing with aberdeen soon in irvine and they consist of 3 teenage
asian girls...definitely worth checking out...cute punk pop...they have a
cd out right now called "right is here" and i think they have a new one
out next week or something...not quite sure.

Do you really think that I am this stupid? It is of course a ridiculous,
tacky abbreviation. Whether or not it is an abbr. doesn't except it from
being a misspelling. Or if it does, do you really care?

No, it was whether or not there is something wrong with meso's head. If
you choose to recall, I didn't bring up the topic of drug use.

DIDN'T YOU!?!?

BAHAHAHAHA....

> Furthemore, you are just like a racist.

Fuckin'A right I am. One and the same. You know what I did the other day?
Right in the middle of sending mail FROM MY AOL ACCOUNT, i threw myself
down on the ground and beat the hell out of myself with a baseball bat.

Are you calling Mark Furman a nigger?

> Sure there are both dumb and brilliant AOLers, Netcomers, African

So it's okay to do so in a positive way?

Aren't you unfairly holding my bigotry against me? I am terrified that
you would make such a general statement about racists as if we were all
the same.

> (as you
> did with your remark) a class or category of people to be dumb is racist,

Why don't you stop this now? You aren't really cut out for it.

> I can imagine some of you saying "yeah,
> but AOL does suck", but that's *your* opinion.

And what is this in your post? God's Infallible Will? Who said that any
statement about the quality of a person or organization even *can* be
something other than an opinion? Tell me, when is a judgement NOT an
opinion?

> Some people truly like AOL
> and who are you to tell them otherwise?

Who are you to tell me otherwise? Here you've accused me of being a
terrifying bigot, and then you ask where I get my right to judge an
online service. When did I undertake to tell someone that they did not
like AOL, anyway?

> Plus, even if AOL does suck, it
> doesn't follow that its users suck.

Great software, great interface, great concept, great system. Shitty
people all over the place, though, just like you might safely say that
most people in prison are pretty shitty. AOL sucks because 99% of its
users are for shit. You will of course note that I did not use Mr.
Knol's chosen online service as a means of arguing against his position.
I merely noted that he is one of many dumb AOLers. I believe it was you
who assumed that this was a redundancy, and that somehow from the
statement "dumb AOLer" can be concluded that the speaker thinks *all* AOL
users are dumb.

You *will* note that, won't you?

> So, we should not welcome AOLers on this list nor listen to what they have
> to say because they are dumb. Right?

No, we should not welcome AOLers onto this list because they are
*probably* dumb. Only when they inevitably confirm our prejudices should
we cease to give them our attention.

> Only people from "cool" internet
> providers will be taken seriously on 4AD-L!

I suppose by this you mean Netcom?

> Everyone else: unsubscribe
> immediately!!! You are not worthy to be among us cool hip internet
> know-it-all elitists!

I suppose it's fair to assume that all people who dislike AOLers are
elitists? Jesus Christ, how many times have I posted to this list from my
AOL account? With how many 4ad-l subscribers from AOL have I joined here
in intelligent discussions? It just goes to show that all people with
cool hip ISPs who do not also have AOL accounts don't know what the hell
they're talking about and just like now and then to publicly vent and
spew the conventional wisdom for the week.

> This kind of attitude is shameful and an
> embarrassment to everyone on this list.

This kind of needless, oblivious sanctimony would be an embarrassment to
everyone on this list were there any reason for 420 people to be
embarrassed by one fool's blather. Do you really think your entire sermon
didn't enter my mind before sending that post? I had a good laugh about
it, too. Lighten up, buddy. Or if you wish to be outraged, at least be
outraged about something about which someone gives a shit.

Annabella Lwin (yes, Lwin)

>> Maybe not dorky, but certainly irritatingly mediocre and complacent

>Lush is FAR from mediocre, and definitely NOT irritating.

I didn't say they themselves were irritating, just that SOMETIMES they are
mediocre/dull and complacent and that THAT can be irritating. There were
some songs on Spooky that just didn't go anywhere and "Hypocrite" was just
too generic-sounding for me. That sort of thing.

On another note:
This is not meant as a slag to Will, but something occurred to me about his
Seefeel vs Cocteaux post, the one that, um, garnered so much attention. I'm
quoting from memory here, but I'm sure the first thing he said was:

"Do not make the mistake of comparing Seefeel and the Cocteau Twins"

which seems fair enough - I mean, the bands are really quite different, and
comparisons can be a bit iffy - but then he said something like:

"Seefeel are far better than anything the Cocteaux could ever do"
                 ^^^^^^
and my point is: isn't that a comparison as well? I thought we weren't
supposed to make those...

Subject: 4AD List?

This is supposed to be the 4AD List, isn't it?

Yes, even I have posted occasionally about non-4AD signings and I've learned
much from others who have done the same. As of late, though, it just seems to
be getting out of hand.

If you'd rather mention something non-4AD related casually, that's fine. But
to fill this list with nothing but seems lazy and silly. If someone brings
up, say, Autechre, and you'd like to go into that particular topic a little
more, it seems logical that you'd continue that discussion with the party
that originated it and not via this list. There are other lists for that sort
of thing.

I'm not that picky either. At least the Cocteau Twins were on 4AD, but all of
this other talk is a waste of a lot of people's time.

I'm into plenty of other musics non-4AD, including the Swirlies, but I'd
rather not read about that stuff on this list (this-listy or not). I'm sure
I'm not alone.

I'll probably get pounced upon for this posting by many (especially e who
seems to subscribe to this list for that purpose alone).

Let's talk 4AD shall we.

Thanks,

Sort Sol

you haven't been on this list for very long have you? one of the cool
things about it is that the list isn't a 4ad list per se. we often discuss
bands "that are on 4ad in parallel universes" (see the FAQ). even though
much of the discussion here is "off topic," most of the bands discussed seem
to fit in with what the rest of us are listening to. besides, who wants to
read about scheer, some kristen hersh religious songs, and a lush ep that
was never released anyway? i hear there's a wonderful 4ad newsgroup though
(snicker). . .

so there,

You are right, you are not alone, I consider this a waste of time too for
many who really want to chat about 4AD.
I had to sign-off from this list, since I was receiving about 60 E-mails a
day, from which 55 were crap.
Instead of arguing like a bunch of kids, lets get into serious opinions and
information. And try everyone to learn a little from each other, if not this'll
be simply rubbish.

if you read the welcome and faq, you'd know that the discussion on this
list encompasses "thislisty" music as well, which is a broad and
general term. you want strictly 4ad talk and nothing but 4ad talk,
start yer own list..otherwise, become intimately familiar with your
  delete key....

According to Ian, the French release of ESP Dolphin (ESP Summer by any other
name is... pretty much the same thing) should be out within the next few
weeks. Throw in the fact that this is a France-only sort of release, and
the availability of this disc should be comparable to that of the Spoonfed
Hybrid 7" that was out a few months back (and speaking of which, we'll be
getting some of those 7"s for mailorder soon).

The 7" on Perdition Plastics will consist of two songs from the tape that's
been remastered on a wire recorder (an amazing piece of equipment from the
days before the magnetic tape was invented). Mono as mono gets, truly. No
word on when that should be ready, tho'.

Cheers,

listen, you kids who want 4ad chatter, one reason there is barely
any 4ad talk is that no one brings up anything worth talking about...
so why don't YOU start a discussion on something 4ad related...
you do have to participate in order to gain results...

The reason why there is no 4AD chatter is because there is nothing to say
about 4AD acts. There so
bunk at this point. Jesus. I will not spend $20.00 for an import to hear shite.

Um, either i totally misconstrued what you said OR you're pretty confused.
What do import prices have to do with anything? In case you haven't
noticed, 4AD is not JUST a UK operation anymore, they are also based in CA
(the same state that your e-mail account seems to indicate you live in). So
either you haven't bought a CD from them at all lately (and, therefore, are
in no position to judge) OR you have bought some recent stuff but you're too
clueless to notice.

Sorry to be so harsh,
cz

Do you mean that it is the vinyl version of the song "clear skin" or the
vinyl version of the whole album "clear skin" (I know there's only one song
on the album, but I just wanted to avoid confusion)? I don't know if there
was a vinyl version of it or not, but the album I have says "promo" on it.

Thanks mucho,

This may be symptomatic of the fact there are few bands left on 4AD's
roster worth talking about.

Okay. What does anyone think of K. Hersh's The Holy single?

the last two days have been really weird. yesterday i saw, in passing, part
of an episode of my so called life. my roommate has all the episodes on
tape and the half-show sparked my interest enough, so last night, after
coincidentally dyeing my hair the same color as angela's (and i'd had the
color picked out for a while, so it was really strange to think back on
this this morning), i started watching the episodes. i was up until 8am
this morning! then, after waking up at 2pm, i had to watch more. i just
finished watching the xmas episode (and drying my eyes.) i would stay up
and watch the rest but i am driving to houston in, oh, 20 minutes for a
rave. help! i have three exams next week and i can't study because of this
show! i have to watch the rest of the tapes! god, i finally see what all
the fuss regarding this show was about. aaaaaaaa!
