The Capital release date is Dec. 5th, from what i've heard. It is a collaboration with the ambient group 'Seefeel', and while I haven't heard it yet, many others have mentioned that it is quite impressive. They have redone 'Cherry-Coloured Funk' and 'Feet-Like Fins'; the other two songs are 'Seekers Who Are Lovers' and 'Violaine'. The new album 'Milk and Kisses' will be out early next year (and will include 2 very different versions of 'Rilkean Heart' and 'Half-Gifts'). I really love 'Twinlights'; thought the simple arrangements and airy atmospherics worked well with Liz's voice. The songs have a wonderful emotional presence about them... It was heavily discussed on this list right when it was released and generated a whole spectrum of opinion from those who hated it to those who thought it was absolutely beautiful. neil

Just some lame questions I have been meaning to ask/repeat... 1. When exactly is the Lush single due out, what's it called, what sort of stuff is on it, has anyone heard it, etc? (I'm excited about it. Does anyone else still are about poor ol Lush?) 2. Has anyone got Stina Nordenstam's singles for So This Is Goodbye or Something Nice? Are there any non-album tracks to be had? I can't for the life of these find these and I absolutely *love* her. :( Help! 3. I'm still needing any info on Harold Budd's self-titled album from (if I am not mistaken) 1971, as well as the track recorded with Eugene Bowen a comp around 1984 or so. Any help, info, dubs, horror stories would as always be appreciated... einexile - updated fax guide coming soon ;)

Oh, certainly. In all the recent 4AD-is-going-down-the-loo threads it's been easy to forget Lush is still one of the few acts they have that are worth supporting every step of the way. Why in the hell is she so underrated/underpromoted? I can't believe her first CD came out in 93, and its already no longer in print. I've been trying to find it for a year. I never hear anything about her in the music press; who did she piss off? I can't imagine her not taking off soon; if she comes out with another CD as good as "and she closed her eyes"; and it gets marketed (and not filed under "stina") correctly, why wouldn't it sell? ASCHE is pure ambrosia!!! At least I hope she doesn't self-destruct on the verge of greatness like the cranes did. :\ (btw, anyone notice that the piano player on the first two cranes cds is listed as Jim Shaw? Is he alison's brother/husband? Did they divorce? Is she single? :) :) Is he even related to her? I noticed he's not on "loved" and there's NO piano. e asks: >> Just saw this at CDE: Harold Budd & Hector Zazou: Glyph. What is this? >> It's new. Who is Hector Zazou? I know the name but cannot place it. Help? Martin says: >Zazou masterminded the iffy-sounding Sahara Blue concept CD, and has done >at least another since then. What?? IFFY? That was one of the BEST albums i discovered last year (it was released in 92 though). It contained work by such listy luminaries as Lisa and Brendan, Anneli Drecker (of Bel Canto), Sakamoto, and Sylvian along with such not so thislisty but still noteworthy artists as John Cale and Bill Laswell. Yes it is a concept album (based on the powerful poetry of Arthur Rimbaud) but it works quite well as opposed to Hector Zazou's latest album, "cold seas," which has all the power of the latest siouxsie album. Well, it's not that bad. After the initial stunn of Anneli creeping into your soul with the chorus of "I'll Strangle You" to a pounding beat, Sahara Blue is a nice mix of international etherial-jazz accompaniment that brings the words of Rimbaud to life with nice vocals and an occasional (well-done) spoken word song. This Budd-Zazou collaboration sounds interesting. I hope their personal excesses will combat each other and not work in tandem. Not like disagreements over an album's merits have never taken place on this list. FWIW, I'd be interested in hearing the Australian import version of the album, which still contains the two songs sung by David Sylvian that were deleted from all other release versions. Otherwise, the album is too musically inconsistent, with more lows than highs, to make it a worthwhile listening experience on the whole. IMO. Sylvian himself has said he dislikes it. Martin who doesn't like compilations or tribute albums as a rule anyway
Didn't mean to send that to the list. Mea Culpa, cz

>>Ivo signs and drops like a major label<< Again, most bands on 4AD do not have contracts per se. The 4AD attitude has always pretty much been based on the option of one recording, then seeing how things work out. Most bands are free to walk at any time and / or 4AD is free to drop them. I really doubt most of anybody on this list, if they had their own label, would keep a band on and finance them if they felt that their work was lacking or not progressing the way that it should. I was pissed when Xymox were dropped, but after witnessing the direction they headed in after that, you just have to realize that a band can put out one work of genius or ten. I haven't heard any of the new stuff and I can't imagine not liking it (until "Twinlights", I couldn't imagine not liking a Cocteau Twins release), but not even the Red House Painters are above turning into crap. Stranger things have happened. And does it really matter if the Red House Painters aren't on 4AD anymore? I don't care personally. I will continue to buy each of their releases as they appeal to me. I haven't agreed with every single thing that 4AD has ever put out. But one of the reasons that I can't dismiss them so readily, one of the reasons that I haven't tired of them, is that they aren't the same label they were a year ago, or the year before that, or the year before that, or the year before that. Ever since being introduced to the label via the Cocteaus in 1985, I have been consistently interested in their output because of the integrity and variety. Sure, I hate Scheer, but if I wanted to only listen to things that never changed and never introduced anything new into my musical world, I'd still be listening to the Ramones.
To eliminate any further confusion between the two most recent 4AD promo compilations, here are complete descriptions of each. Facing The Wrong Way (hereafter FTWW, cat.no. FTWW1, 13 TRACKS) Released in the UK only with a "buy one 4AD release from the back catalogue and get FTWW free" deal at certain stores. Digipak format, mostly pink and orange artwork showing a wierd burst of worm-like objects. The CD itself comes in two versions: plain orange, and a repeat of the design on the front cover. There has also been a wide variation noted in the how dark this second variety was printed. Design: Vaughan Oliver / v23. Assistance: Kees Hubers. Photography: Jason Love. ...think I'm getting the hang of it (hereafter TIGTHOI, cat.no.PRO-CD-7625, 9 TRACKS) Released in the US only as a giveaway at The Body Shop with a minimum purchase of $20 of their typically overpriced soap/bath/purfume related products. This is now finally available. The CD comes in one of those cheap cardboard sleeves, just like the No Balls sampler. The artwork is the "coffee grounds covering a moldy orange" design. Design: Vaughan Oliver at v23. Photography: Jason Love. Since the tracklistings are not identical, here's a breakdown of what's on what: Scheer - Take You Anywhere [FTWW] Scheer - Sometimes [TIGTHOI] Throwing Muses - Snakeface [FTWW] Red House Painters - Summer Dress [FTWW] Red House Painters - Cabezon [TIGTHOI] Tarnation - The Well [FTWW + TIGTHOI] Air Miami - You Sweet Little Heartbreake [FTWW] Air Miami - Dolphin Expressway [TIGTHOI] Mojave - Love Songs On The Radio [FTWW] Belly - Super-Connected [FTWW] The Wolfgang Press - Christianity (Wicked Man Remix) [FTWW + TIGTHOI] Heidi Berry - Miracle (New Version) [FTWW + TIGTHOI] Lisa Gerrard - Sanvean [FTWW + TIGTHOI] Liquorice - Cheap Cuts [FTWW + TIGTHOI] Kendra Smith - Valley Of The Morning Sun [FTWW + TIGTHOI] The Amps - Empty Glasses (4 track version) [FTWW] So obviously FTWW is the one to try to get-- big surprise, it's the UK only release. Plus you don't have to buy a ton of overpriced, pretentious soap. Heard a bit of Otherness yesterday. Anyone else out there fans of The Teardrop Explodes? I just dug out my old vinyl copies of Kilimanjaro and Wilder and I must say that these are two damn fine albums! I don't want to start a whole discussion on them (well, maybe it *would* liven up the list a bit...), but I was wondering what the 3rd TTE album Everyone Wants To Shag... is like, and is the compilation called Piano worth owning? Furthermore, are Julian Cope's early solo albums any good? Forget about everything from World Shut Your Mouth onward... I've had Otherness now for about 3 or 4 days. Anyone in LA needing info on where to find it, email me. I love it in a big way. The 1'st song, Feet Like Fins should not even be called that because there is no, or very little, resemblance to the original on Victorialand (other than a few obscure source sounds). I kept waiting for it to really kick in, but it never happened. So, don't expect a "remix" of it; expect a great minimal-ambient Seefeel song ala pure/impure or quique era. Cherry Colored Funk resembles the orginal a little bit more, but again expect a radically different song that spirals into pleasant ambient loops. The two new songs are cool as well. Violane has some very nice guitar loops. The whole EP is a cool ambient-chill-out sort of CD, not as poppy as anything that the Cocteaus have done in quite a long time. Take Care, Ryan
For all you fans of Seefeel...get a clue, folks! Seefeel is a great ambient group, but do not compare them with the Cocteau Twins. I think were talking, apple and oranges. I recently bought the Seefeel album, Quique. I listen to a lot of trip-hop and ambient music. The vocalist on Seefeel doesn't even come close to the diversity of vocal sounds as the Cocteau Twins. I say to all of you listen before you leap to expressions of comparisons. "Smallpox infested blankets! Thank you, John Smith" Pocahontas via the cartoon, LA Cucaracha. I've only just joined this list, and so this is probably a FAQ, but I need to know if there is a place in the US where one can get 4AD releases at a reasonable cost. I'd love to get my hands on some of these compilation disks, but any time I see 4AD stuff in Boston, it's upwards of $25 a disk. Any suggestions?
