I personally know very little about the spacemen. I wanted to give them
a try a while back and bought the first fucked up album, which sounds a
bit too much like the velvets to me. anyway, i found something that i
thought y'all might be more interested in than me. or maybe not. it
says "Spacemen 3-The Choice Is Revolution ..CD 10/30 (availability date)
limited to 500. 44 minutes long, 3 tracks; Take me to the other side,
Rollercoaster and Revolution. All tracks by sonic boom." sorry if you
all know about this already. I don't tend to read the spacey posts too
carefully. oh yeah, this is from the Intergalactic Garage. That is all.

First, the 4AD (and related) stuff. I got this straight from the new
releases mailing list:

*R10/31 Kristin Hersh The Holy Single

* 11/21 Cocteau Twins Otherness EP

Now onto the non-4AD related stuff. Does anyone know when and if Goldie's
album is coming out in the US? And what about Seefeel's and the Jazz
Butcher's latest? Help!

Also does anyone know if the new Mark Burgess (ex-Chameleons) album is any
good? And can someone tell me about Autechre (I know, people have been
talking about them on the list a lot, but I haven't been listening) and
Towering Inferno. Thanks.

Papa's Gun, one of the bands we reviewed not too long ago in Dewdrops
is playing tomorrow night (25th) at the Overpass in Manayunk, PA
as part of the Philadelphia Music Conference Showcase.
More info: 215-487-1009
Papa's Gun info: 610-259-8428

We gave them a pretty favorable review and I bet they're
something to see live.

Subject: Just walked by my local indie-friendly record store

to look at the fresh produce that appears on Tuesdays. Of course the was no
_Otherness_ around but I did encounter a couple of swell items, out today:

Stereolab's _Refried Ectoplasm [Switched On Volume 2]_ is finally out
domestically, on Drag City. The package is a folding, three-part, brown
cardboard thing with teal and peach printing, a pretty package, but a
little hard on the eyes. I like that they print all the info about the
songs, what they were originally on, label, cat. no., quantity made, color
of vinyl, etc. for the curious fanatic in me. I had only heard a couple of
the songs before so most of the 13 tracks are new to me. Compared to their
other releases, RE is more varied, pretty much all over their map
(except maybe _The Amorphous Bod Study_ thing.) The tracks that strike me
on the first couple of listens are: "French Disco" is a great driving, poppy
thing. "Tone Burst [Country]" cracks me up; it's more Western-ridin'-down-
the-Martian-trail than country. "'Animal or Vegetable [A Wonderful Wooden
Reason...]'" the b-side to a collaboration with Nurse with Wound, has a
beautiful beginning, very soothing, then goes into an ~10 min groove-jam,
and ends with some digitally manipulated mayhem that reminds me of some songs
on Skinny Puppy's _Last Rights_. "John Cage Bubble Gum" is just another
classic Stereolab tune that I never had, either on the original 7" or the
recent Slumberland compilation. There are more songs in French than on
other full-lengths -- kind of motivation for me to think more about the
French I should know. Altogether, the CD is a very considerate (and
economically sensible) thing for the groop to do for people like me. Thanks.

Also out today (yesterday now):
The Magnetic Fields' _The Magnetic Fields, [um something- something]_
on Merge. I forget the rest of the title now. I didn't spring for this one
yet. I'm thinking Merge will have sent one to the station that I could
listen to first, but if you know you like Steven Merritt's sad-love-story
pop songs with the perfect synth arrangements, you know you like them.
It does have the "All the Umbrellas in London" song that came out on a 7"
earlier this year.

Spacemen 3 were Sonic Boom (or Pete Kember to his mum) and Jason
Spaceman (or Jason Pierce), plus various bass players, drummers,
violinists etc. They split after four albums, Sonic went on to form
Spectrum and EAR, Jason to form Spiritualized. Best things to start

Spacemen 3 = Playing with Fire
Spectrum = Highs, Lows and Heavenly Blows
Spiritualized = Lazer Guided Melodies

On an entirely unrelated note, ST ETIENNE ARE BACK!!! New single on
Monday, and a "Greatest Hits" album soon (i.e. every single they have
ever released, none of which were huge hits).

ok, think i ought to tell all of you on here too - apologies to anyone
who's read this before, especially those in places that don't get channel
4.

'to kill a dead man', the short (15 min) film done by portishead to go
with the dummy lp (or something) is screened at 1:20 on the night of 1st
november on the aforementioned ch4. looks good from the clips i've seen
(the video to glory box had snippets in it i think, beth in a hospital
bed).

('they shoot horses, don't they' is on earlier in the evening on bbc1 and
that is also well worth watching but make sure you've remembered to take
your prozac...)

If it is on disc, it is a bootleg. Jim Cauty's 'Space' was only
released on vinyl. I once had a copy of The KLF's '1987' on disc, (the
one they were forced to destroy all copies of because of the ABBA's
"Dancing Queen" sample), so it is pretty likely that 'Space' eventually
made it to a bootleg disc, as there are far more copies of it floating
around. I've heard 'Space' on cassette and I think it is quite good.

There is a good discography somewhere on the Internet. I don't have
the address, but if you have a search you can find it.
