I admit that calling Jarboe's music creepy, is really vague.
But I was only generalising. I've always seen Gira's songs as "dead serious",
whereas Jarboe's contributions are more "otherworldly".
I've never heard her non-Swans related releases, basically I veered away
from them due to their tacky covers, but "Sacrificial Cake" is along the
lines
of Skin. (If that helps at all...)

There is a preview up now of 4AD's official WWW-site! It looks rather good.
The layout and typeface are like the Mailorder catalogue. I tried the
address that was announced a few months ago: www.4ad.com, but got connected
www.iuma.com/4AD/preview
to read that:
"after reconciling the ephemeral aural experience and its
visually aesthetic counterpart to pynchon's dreaded sieve
of binary reductivism, 4AD and v/23 tossed back a few
transatlantic highballs and whipped up this little
internet site delight.
arriving fashionably late to this cosmic cocktail party,
our presence will remain poised on the cusp of a current
us/uk release schedule while our attention will canvass
the site with pre-releases, exclusive interviews, images,
elements and still and stop-motion photography -- a slant
intimate and informal.
and while 4AD looks forward to passing out limited edition
and pre-release party favors on a monthly basis, v/23
plans to invite graphic artists, photographers, short-film
makers and the occasional naredowell upstairs where they
can see the site as a turnstyle platform for their own
work.
at this stage, and with the kind and steady assistance of
the good people at iuma, we offer an appetizer. the v/23
designed site presents pages on the artists and tracks
from our first publication. paying close attention to
highlighted links will transform unfulfilled expectations
into anticiption. additionally, visitors may register at
the site while artists may register to show their work.
4AD invites our visitors to register on the site
4AD invites you to register on THE SITE. We'll keep you apprised
of site specific events, offers and deadlines, as well as information
on the artists, the label and v/23. The first one-hundred will receive
either an Air Miami or The Amps 7".
One name and address will be pulled out of the digital hat each week
for four weeks and that person will receive a rare signed edition of
THIS RIMY RIVER Vaughan Oliver and v23 graphic works 1988 - 94 (peep)"

You need to shop around some more. I've found places that would do a
2-hour tape for $20. Of course, it varies from city to city. If you have
a lot of decoding to do, look into renting a multi-format VCR. I was
able to decode over 10 hours of stuff for $80 that way.
Sorry for this non-musical interjection.

hey ivo!
how are you?! how's the internship coming along? i still haven't called
yet...kinda nervous to talk to that john guy...afraid to get rejected...who
did you talk to when you got interviewed? i met bev chin and rich
holtzman...which in fact, rich, who you work for was the boyfriend of our
radio station's music director, hillary. she was the one who suggested that
i call to inquire about an internship since my show was basically all
4ad/creation oriented...should i call and ask for john again or just talk to
whoever is on the phone? i don't know...any advice??!!
thanks for the rarity info for the lilliput. the reason i asked is bcuz i
just bought it from rockaway records on glendale blvd a few days ago for $55
brand new...well, the girl said it was brand new to her knowledge, but i'm
not really sure if it was used or not. it's in super good condition though
and the cds seems and looks as though it has never been taken out of the
container...true most of the stuff can be found elsewhere but i don't have a
lot of the stuff in there, i.e. xmal deustchland, ultra vivid scene, the
wolfgang press, modern english, etc...
hey, how was ivo's daughter? how is ivo?! when i almost went to see mark
kozelek play when he was here a few months ago at lunapark, i couldn't get in
bcuz i'm under 21 but i had some zines i wanted to give him but the guy at
the door how was letting people in were checking ids and he was checking the
id of this guy who said he was from 4ad and had a british accent and i
thought that was ivo...but when i asked the id checker if he can give the
zines to mark, the brit guy said he would give it to mark...the next day at
the interview at 4ad, i found out from john, who saw my zines at the show,
that the brit guy was paul mcmenamin from v23. cool huh?! yeh, that would
be soo cool if we can work together...let me know ok if there are any
openings or any advice you might have for me.
talk to you soon!

A friend of mine has been hunting for a cover of a song called "Haunted"
done twice by Shane McGowan and two different females. Anyone know of
these and what they are found on?

Oh god... this site looks great!
Cliff Walton mentioned it some days ago when I asked him if 4AD was
planning to create a website, but he didn't give the URL (so thanks Bruce!)
It's a bit 'heavy' with all those jpeg images but what would a 4AD site be
without them?
If they put all the back-catalogue information on this site I will probably
delete my own 'unofficial 4AD catalogue'. This gives me some space to
create something else.

I just saw the video for Air Miami's "I Hate Milk" and to me, that
does indeed look like Romania in the video. The only person I
recognized was Mark, who takes a ski mask off and drinks wine. The
rest of the video looks very "80s" minimal, with a lot of
breakdancers...
I also saw the video for _Rilkean Heart/Half Gifts_. The video opens
with a short title sequence, and then _Rilkean Heart_ plays. There's
a brief interlude inbetween and then _Half-Gifts_ begins, after that,
final credtis of: "Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie, Simon Raymonde,
Directed by Dirk Van Dooren & Graham Wood, Tomato 1995." The
video(s) themselves are overlays of what looks like super 8mm of the
band outdoors. I haven't gotten a hold of the new single, so I don't
know if lyrics are included, but the lyrics are all over the video.
Here they are (just in case) (and I realize the lyrics don't quite
match up) (? = hard to read text):
_Rilkean Heart_
Rilkean heart I looked for you to give me transcendent experiences to
transport me out of self and aloneness and alienation into a sense of
oneness and connection, ecstatic and magical I became a junkie for it
I came looking for the next high and I'm sorry I've been putting the
search on the wrong place I understand that you're confused feeling
overwhelmed that's a feeling state from then the reality that with
cleaning up emotional (?) and I'm getting in touch I'm beginning to
ground myself in my own sense of being one entity (?) become truly
self reliant and become connected with something beyond me that is
where I have to I'm so (?) you're lost and you don't know what to do.
_Half-Gifts_
It's an old game my love, when you can't have me you want me, because
you know that you're not risking anything, [intimacy is when we're in
the same place at the same time, dealing honestly with how we feel,
that's what grown up's do, that is a mature thinking], (??) steal a
junkie for it, it takes me out of my lonliness, but this relationship
cannot sustain itself [chorus] I just have to know, how to be in the
process of creating things in a better way, it hurts but it's a lie
that I can't have it all, but I still have a world of meness to
fulfill, I still care about this planet, I am still connected (??)
and to my dreams for myself, I have my friends and family, i have
myself, I still have me.
by the way, I saw these on a local Public Acccess video show that's
been around for years on South Bay Cable Channel 6 (use to be 30)

I actually liked the vibes, but now I know they're fake, maybe not...

several CT albums trying to find it, thereby discovering Victorialand

But words that don't scan properly can be nice sometimes (I'm thinking
specifically of Laetitia here)...

Ugh, tell me about it..."look at me everyone, I'm sooo ethereal...I'm a
poetess! Liz Fraser? Never heard of her, but probably not as good a singer
as me!" She's apparently quite full of herself, which kind of shows through
in her singing. And that thing she did with Delerium [sic] sounds like Enigma

Mutilated? My penis has always looked like that!
It's the same pic. (it looks to me like some kind of root) you can find on
the cover of the 'Joe Friday' 7", shot by Jason Love. Love is also
responsible for those weird pictures on 'No Balls', 'Think I'm Getting The
Hang Of It', 'Yeah But' and 'Facing The Wrong Way'.

Hello all-
when I wrote
>>>>I've always thought of the EP 'Peppermint Pig' as a single from the
'Garlands' album because "Hazel" is on both.<<<<
I meant by this that I think of 'Garlands' and 'Peppermint Pig' so
interchangably that I *think* of 'Peppermint Pig' as a single, even though I
know the 'Hazel' on 'Garlands' is from the Peel Sessions...sorry for the
confusion.
neil
--------------------------
Actually, "Hazel" was not on the "Garlands" LP, it was a Peel session
included as a bonus track with the "Garlands" CD. Actually, the "Garlands"
bonus tracks were a major incentive when I finally decided to get a CD
player.
