>>does anyone have a list of deluxe editions of 4AD albums released?
>
>I don't wanna sound like a complete moron but what is a deluxe album?
Most of the deluxe editions of 4AD (UK) releases have an extra D after the
catalog letters. For example CAD D 703 is the _Lonley is an Eysore_ vinyl LP
that comes in the fold-apart sleeve with the big book in it. The extra,
super-duper deluxe wooden LIAE box that collectors drool about is CAD X 703
though.
If someone doesn't have a list of these, you could probably use the interactive
version of the eyesore database to search for that extra "D" in the cat. #.
Lars could probably do this in his sleep. not me though.
The ones I can think of off hand, the numbers I looked up in eyesore:
VAD D 4015 _Toward the Within_ box with video and cd
CAD D 5002 CD _University_ box with postcards and cd
BAD D 2001 "For Love" 10"
CAD D 2002 CD _Spooky_ fold-out digipak
CAD D 2002 _Spooky_ double 10"
CAD D 4002 CD _Hips and Makers_ digipak with lyric cards
CAD D 4002 [CD] the second "Firepile" ep
CAD D 2013 [CD] _Red Heaven_ with Kristin Hersh live at Maxwells
the Belly _King_ book
There are probably a lot more that aren't as recent.

Is the _Blue Bell Knoll_ dat the only dat 4AD released, and why they went with
this format for this one(?) release?

yes, there are places like rec.music.marketplace to pitch your stuff
at, BUT not everyone receives and/or subs to such groups. *also*, if
you are selling something "thislisty", it's a good idea to sell it on
the list that coined the term. plus, if the sub says For Sale or Auction
or something to that effect, and you can skip over it...do so. only
the digest subscribers have a right to feel really grumpy about this...
what i'm grumpy about is the fact that our li'l list doesn't do much
in the way of real discussion. we chit chat about where all the new
promos are, sometimes there will be a review of some music...but the

i disagree with most ppl on the list saying that the sales/auction
postings are not courteous and a bitch to look at and all
that...yeh, there is a delete key and just press it if you don't want to
read it. i enjoy seeing ppl sell and auction stuff, at least i know
i can get some good hard-to-find thislisty stuff while i'm checking my
e-mail...if it were not for these auctions, i would not have been able to
get some rarities that i have now. i am very thankful for those who do
wish to let go of their most prized possessions and share it with the
rest of us...yeh there are those rec.music.marketplaces groups, but not
everyone can get it or not everyone knows how to get on it. i'm sure
those of you who have bidded on an hard-to-find item and gotten it are
very glad that they have this medium to get something they have been
wanting for a long time. so just be thankful you do have this type of
service and stop bitching...maybe those of you who are bitching and are
tired of seeing these auctions are the ones who already have everything
and don't need to be bothered by what you already have.

What is a deluxe album?
Well, most record companies release their material in bog standard formats
- nasty platic cases and bad artwork.
4AD are a luvverly bunch of people who make sure for most releases there is
also a 'deluxe package' available when an album is first released. This
isn't so easy to do with cds (but usually means a bonus cd being included,
eg Red Heaven came with a live Kristen Hersch cd, Funky Little Demons came
with a four track remix cd)
Where the concept comes into its own is with the 4AD vinyl releases: Lush's
compilation lp (I forget what it was actually called coz its just the
singles to me) came in a double sleeved affair with artwork printed INSIDE
the sleeve - the cd I believe was a foldout box thing which a friend at
college cooed about for weeks. The Lush lp after that came in a double
10inch vinyl gatefold.
These are normally priced editions that go to good independent outlets (the
UK's "Chain With No Name" usually). So, if you're a fan, when you want the
new release you can pick up a sort of lovingly hand crafted "thank you for
buying me in the first week and ensuring that Tower Records doesn't have a
complete monopoly" gift from your friends the artistes.
Either that or its a cynical ploy........

Remember there are other people on this list who don't reside in the US.
How many bids are received from non-US list members.
Maybe I'm a little jealous seeing all these rare Cds and promos etc
for sale that I can't get.
As I have never sent money to the US how do you go about doing it?
And how reliable is it?

I'm also happy that people sell stuff on the list. I've
managed to pick up a lot of good stuff this way. However
I don't think that bid updates should go to the list,
only to interested parties. Also bids to the seller should
always be sent direct to the seller, not to the list.
If people would hold to these standards, I don't think there
would be much to complain about. The problem lies however
in education, as always.

The opening to Toward The Within is compiled footage from
the movie Baraka. The movie also contains DCD's
"Host of Seraphim" in full, and a smattering of Lisa Gerrard
vocal bits in one section. I highly recommend the film, especially
if you can still see it at a cinema or especially an IMAX.

I don't think that anyone is complaining about just *one* sale posting. It's
that many updates and should-be-in-personal-mail-but-isn't messages get sent
to the list also, taking up more bandwith than is needed. I belong to four
or five mailing lists, and the extra mail DOES get to me... especially when
I sort it out, see that ten messages are from the 4ad list -- and then most
of them are, to me, junk.

I think this has more than a bit to do with the way the change to the new
list server was handled. I know that I was dropped from the list, and I
never got a message saying "hey, we're moving"... me being someone who has
been on the list, lurking sometimes, participating sometimes, for years,
across five or six different accounts. I found out randomly from Yahoo that
the list had moved just a few weeks ago; and I agree, the tone of the list
seems to have changed quite a bit.

I totally agree with jenor! I like very much the stuff for sale, and
the auctions are good, too. However, the blow by blow bidding has to
go. This is for private email. Please report the start of the
auction and the going twice results( to allow those just getting on
the list a chance for a last minute bid). The bidding in between and
the final results are for private email only. Keep this shit off
4ad-l! I am serious. Are you follks too lazy to run the auction
properly? Too stupid? What is your excuse for being so
inconsiderate? Even if your mail reader doesn't distinquish between
the list and the listie( in mailx 'r' and 'R'), you should still use
an emailer and a mouse grab to send a private response( under mailx
'm' and cut and paste with the mouse under X windows).

I agree that once an original posting about an auction is made, the rest
should be done through private email.
I also agree that the flames should be private too.
This morning I posted a flame to a flame in response to the response to
the original posting. The person replied to me privately, and in turn I
responded privately to him... although this may turn out to be yet
another verbal arm wrestling match (turn out??? like it isn't

Agreed. Does anyone think it's at all possible for us to start a monthly
digest for this list--one, for example, that just provides us with a recap of
weekly discussions, and NEW information that isn't being regurgitated?
I don't know about you, but all I really want from this list is announcements

Funny, I just put it in 5 minutes ago.
Track Listing:
1. Sight of You
2. She Rides the Waves
3. Mother Might
4. Colours and Shapes (a "new" song)
5. A Deeper Sleep for Steven (a remix of the "Comforts. . ." track)
6. Half-Life, Remembered
7. Baby Maker
8. Two Sick Sisters
9. A Revelation
10. The Colour of the Sky
"Barging" and The Colour of the Sky has some weird music box tune at the
end of it. It lasts about 30 seconds or so and slowly winds down. Very
eerie. . (Does anyone know what song it's playing?)

First the obligatory "I don't mind auctions" comment.
And a big YES for the idea to have more reviews / music discussion.
So here's my submission.
Daniel Figgis - Skipper
-----------------------
(all of this is off the top of my head, so a better one
will be posted to our web page very soon, to start off
a new feature.)
Daniel Figgis is an Irish composer, a term which might
imply classical music. And there's a definite orchestral element,
involving string arrangements a` la Martin McCarrick, with
violins/viola/cello, but that's merely 1/10 of the story.
Imagine Warren Defever conducting an orchestra and you can
fill in the rest. ("Orchestra" isn't really the right term, at
least not strictly in the classical sense, but more sort of a
new age sense.) There is an oddness,
or a freedom from guidelines and rational thought that flows
through the music, creating something truly original. Many of the songs
are built around a harmonium (sounds like a cross between an
accordion and a keyboard, or maybe a hurdy-gurdy and Kendra Smith's
pump organ), with a whole ton of other noises and creatively named
instruments thrown in: clocks winding, wooden creaks and clunks,
fuzzbass, bomb guitar, wave, flutes, tuned distortion, piano, badly
treated piano, foghorn, shortwaves, tape loops, turntable (a skipping
runout groove adding to the rhythm), book (the sound of flipping
pages followed by the book being dropped on a table, and the
"smack" sound made to resonate through the other instruments).
It's all quite amazing and beautiful, very lush with the strangest
textures. It's pretty hard to describe, but I highly recommend it.
Now, if you can just find it... It's import only on Rough Trade.
Has anyone else heard this album?

if all you want is a monthy recap of what was discussed on the list,
then you should subscribe to the sink-n-tired list (there are two
versions, I think: one that is a post&reply set up like this
list, and the other being the monthly mailer that recaps discussions
on a large number of li) so you don't have to bother with
reading the messages yourself. It's kinda like the t.v. show TALK SOUP,
which does recaps of the events on daily talk shows. Maybe that's
what you're looking for...

As long as we're on the subject of deluxes, is there anyone out there who
wants to part with his/her Japanese import Spoonfed Hybrid S/T album (you
know, the one with the two bonus tracks.) Having them on vinyl just
doesn't do it for me.

Haven't seen any posts about the new that dog. I remember their first
album being pretty much trashed here in 4ad-land, although it did have
a few supporters. I thought it was about average. Well, I just bought
the new album and I think it's incredible. They seem much more
confident in their playing abilities and the songs have a tighter, more
straight forward feel to them. The balance between clean and thick
buzzy guitar sounds is right on. All the guitar sounds are great and
it's even better when anna switches from clean to distortion to clean
again. The songs have a great deal of texture to them. I listened to
the new album at a tower listening booth, so if you're close to one you
may want to check it out there first. Also, their video for he's
kissing christian was on 120 minutes last night. Anyone else have any
opinions on this?

and so i only responded to what i did read...which was a complaint about
selling and/or auctioning stuff off on the list.

and in turn, these notes are taking up bandwith. i'm not going to get
started on the "waste of bandwith" issue because i think it's a crock...

there are ways of filtering your mail, and anyone who has a problem
with junk mail should look into such programs if their internet
service allows for such.

well, i thought the list had a major discussion problem long before it
moved....but that's just me....

Does ANYONE on this list have actual proof or even first hand word of
mouth that Mojave and Slowdive do not exist at the same time?? I have
asked this question three times. If the answer is in fact NO, would
somebody please admit it?
The Mojave album cannot possibly be as different as Pygmalion was from
5ep or 5ep was from Souvlaki, and I can't conceive that Neil Halstead
would be so shallow to let label relationships influence the names of his
musical projects. That is disgusting to me.
Several people on this list have heard the Mojave song on the new
sampler, and should have no question in their mind as to whether or not
Chris Trout is playing piano on the record or not. Why has there been no
speculation on this at all? You people need some caffeine. There used to
be some serious detective work going on here. Now you bunch of dishwater
Slowdive fans face your greatest challenge and you just sit there with
your feet soaking, reading Anne Rice or falling asleep. Disgusting!

The bandwidth being wasted is peoples time having to delete this stuff.
The filters out there are a far cry from the artificial intelligence
neccessary to do what would be needed.
The problem is indeed the bidding updates. This is private email
stuff.

Here are the final words on the following items.
This info comes directly from the 4AD US Office.
> Does Slowdive still exist?
No. Slowdive is dead.
Mojave have taken their place. They will not exist as two
separate groups, so from now on it's Mojave.
> Is it Chris Trout in Mojave?
No. His name is Christopher Andrews.
> What's the deal with the Body Shop promo?
Yes it IS the "soap variety" Body Shop, not a strip club,
nor an auto salvage company.
The promo CD WILL be available in a few select Body Shops,
with a minimum purchase of soap, bath beads, or whatever.
The reason no-one has had any luck yet is that the promotion
has not yet started. Those on the Warner Bros. mailing list
received theirs already, but no Body Shops have any yet.
I am told that there will be nothing on the CD that you can't
easily get elsewhere. And the hidden track IS Mojave.

Gee, that's about the most depressing post I've ever seen on this
listserv, and I read the whole Auction War. Thanks for getting us up to
speed, Brant, you're a pal. :)
4AD really knows how to keep us coming back for more, eh?

What mailing list? Do you mean that if I sent them $2 or however much the
4AD cat. was (and then wait 4 mos.) I am now *on* the mailing list? hmmm...
I guess I answered my own ?, I have no cd, thus I'm not on the mailing list.
ah-ha.
>I am told that there

Yes, but we want the "All Virgos think they're getting the hang of no balls"
cd right damn now. While it's true in a year this squabble over where, how,
and why the Body Shop would carry such an item will indeed be oh-so-trivial,
right at this point we (or I) don't want to wait for the release date of such
and such a cd only to find out it's been pushed back. This pushing back of
dates can only be somewhat cured by...!!!"+ SAMPLER CDS +"!!! which have
'that' track we would just die to hear. Only to say, "yea, I heard it, and
it ain't all that great." But anyway I still want it and I won't sleep (not
well anyhow) until I get it. Impatience is a TRUE vice.
I recall sometime ago, a cd by an act known as 'Rossberger Report' was to be
released on 4AD. I was led to believe later that it was a reformed Xmal
Deutschland. Any reasons why this never came to be?
Another what happened to...
There was a pre-Mazzy Star group called 'Going Home' that was to have it's
only(?) recording re-released back in April on 4AD also. It was produced by
David Roback, and featured Hope Sandoval and someone else I do not recall at
the moment. Can anyone shed light on this one?
Inquiry-
I don't wanna sell, I just wanna buy =)
I want to purchase either the lp or cd of the Voix Des Bulagares both vol. I
and vol. II. These are *not* out of print (to my knowledge). I realize you
can get these from 4AD m.o., but after everything is said and done it costs
an arm and both legs. So, if you can help me out, DO privately e-mail me,
and DO NOT(!) mail the list.
I thank you all.

and this'll... (well you know the rest)
Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of all that bad news, folks.
I guess prices for all those Slowdive EPs are going to go
through the roof now, huh? By the way, you can get the
Sunday blue flexi through IPR for dirt cheap. Don't pay anyone
more than $5 for it.
some better news:
On the horizon is Lisa Gerrard's new album. Someone already
posted some words about it, and I'd like to reiterate
that this is one goregous album! And _long_ too. Much of it
is material she did at her two shows during AVAM and the
one afterward at the Ebell Theater. She does another version
of "Sanvaen" from Toward The Within which is one of the most
profoundly beautiful things I've ever heard (along with
"Host Of Seraphim")
